Theran, Revisited

I've been doing some work on my projected progression for Theran; the chart I made before failed to take into account the additonal effective spellcaster levels of the Spellsword Prestige Class, as well as the fact that the familiar's statistics (saving throws, hit points, etc.) go up as the master's do, regardless of what class the master takes. It's just the special abilities of the familiar that only improve as the master's spellcasting classes do. So I don't need to worry quite so much about Kitty.

To beef Theran up a bit, I added some more levels of Fighter as he went along. He still lags far behind a pure fighter in terms of BAB and Feats, but not anywhere near as far as I thought before ... slightly behind a rogue or cleric, but in the same ballpark -- with the added punch of having much cooler spells, on the whole.

By the time 20th level rolls around, Theran is roughly on par with a 14th level Fighter in combat, and an 11th level Wizard in spellcasting -- plus he can switch back and forth between the two quickly and easily. His ability to ignore up to 20% of the arcane spell failure chance for heavy armor means that he can wear something as heavy as a chain shirt without it messing up his spellcasting at all, and even full plate would only negate 15% of his spells.

I don't actually picture him ever wearing heavy armor ... the movement penalties involved are contradictory to my conception of him as jumping into the middle of the fray, tossing off magic missiles one moment and lopping off enemies' heads the next. So we'll have to see what stats [livejournal.com profile] jamesbarrett comes up with for the black dragon hide armor. According to the Monster Manual, dragonscale armor is effectively just masterwork quality unless enchanted ... which in Theran's case wouldn't be worth the exchange. His chain shirt has the same protection as masterwork scale armor would, with lower penalties. Of course, Frisk may very well overrule the bit about armor in the MM. I certainly would in my game. Dragonscale armor should be an extra-cool treasure, to go witht he extra-cool monster you had to defeat to get it!

At some point, I'll have to start figuring out where his Feats are going to go. Feats regarding the ability to move around the battlefield without penalties and strike multiple foes are certainly within conception; he also has already started playing around with crafting and modifying magic items, so various item creation feats are probably in order. I don't really see him doing a lot of potion brewing, divination, and the like ... he's not an alchemical-laborory inclined wizard. For him, the purpose of magic is to get out there and do stuff with it. Scribing scrolls and creating wands is certainly in order, however.

For some reason, LJ puts a huge white space here. The post continues below.
