I know the cover art turns you off, but really, give the Glen Cook "Garrett P.I." series a chance. It seems to sit solidly in that intermediate point in a fantasy world where magic and technology are each kind of creepy, but one of them doesn't usually involve the user being slightly insane.
The main character is snarky and well written, in a delightful hardboiled self-narration.
