Spank You Very Much

Spanky is such a goof. After moving him downstairs, he started adding ~30 lbs to every measurement ... I guess he preferred being on the second floor or something. I don't know exactly what my correct weight is, but when he told me I was 291 lbs, I decided the fumes from the laundry must be getting to him or something. Like I said last week, I've been 291 pounds, and I know this ain't it.

So I moved the scale back upstairs to where I was taking measurements before, and he said "264.5 lbs, 38% bodyfat," which is probably inaccurate, but it is at least consistently inaccurate. The last measurement taken in that spot was 267,5, 38%, two weeks ago, and I would guess that a loss of about 3 lbs. is about right for the past two weeks.

Okay, fine, whatever. Since the important measure is my relative weight and bodyfat percentage (i.e., I'm trying to track what I've lost), I'll accept that and keep on moving. Next time I'm at the doctor, I'll get a more accurate "actual weight."

Speaking of this whole subject, the Bowflex is done. Let the flexing of power rods commence! ;)

I'm not doing anything atm unfortunately :( My studies just don't allow me the time. There's a Wushu school about 15 min away from my house. I really want to get into the contemporary side of it, because I've always wanted to do gymnastics, and contemporary Wushu basically has the same kind of training (balance, coordination, flexibility, acrobatics). Hopefully next year, when I'm done with my studies, I'll take it up.

I did do about 2 months of Wing Chun, but it was too inactive for my liking. I take it because you're doing Long Fist you're learning a lot of long-range attacks, high stances and focussing a lot on kicks?

Well, the basic horse stance is kept as low as possible, but there are some higher stances at levels above mine. (I'm still working on getting my first belt.)

That's an interesting comment re: Wing Chun being "inactive." You mean it didn't involve a lot of footwork, etc.? Because that was something that bugged me about it as well ... the basic thrust of Wing Chun as I gathered it was "do whatever is necessary to set up a chain punch, then throw chain punches until your target is on the ground, broken."

At the same time, Wing Chun is a more "hurt 'em quick" art ... it was designed by a nun who wanted to ward off robbers, rather than for more meditative qualities. :) So the lack of foofery makes a certain amount of sense, there.

Sport Wu Shu is a very atheletic form, so if it's gymnastics you're looking for, it's an excellent choice. Shaolin Kung Fu is a slightly more martial close relative -- a more worldly older brother, perhaps. ;) We do rolling and cartwheels and such as well, but it comes later rather than sooner, and always as a supplement to stances, strikes, and blocks.

At my level, I'm still learning the foundation moves, and as such, most of what I'm learning is not that different from Karate, Tae Kwon Do, or Kickboxing. But as I get further into the style, the "long fist" aspect of it will probably come to the fore. It features high punches, lots of punch-kick combos, and so on. :)
