This is probably not a practical solution for you, but at the end of October I went through my entire following list and muted RTs on everyone. You would not believe how much difference this made in my feed. My feed is much less crowded and, most importantly, it's only full of the things my friends are actually saying themselves. A huge fraction of the negativity on my feed came from RTs. Probably 90% of it.

A less radical solution that I've used before is when I've looked at who's RT'ing about a controversy I've read enough about already, and just turn off RTs for them. One person who does a lot of RTing can really overwhelm my feed. -_-

Anyway, this was a thing I did for Nano so I could keep up with my friends on Twitter without giving up Twitter entirely, but I'm probably never undoing it. I have mixed emotions about this, because I think retweets are part of the charm of Twitter and a good way to discover people, on the one hand.

On the other, I am so much happier with my RT-free feed. :/

Anyway, I hope your Twitter experience is back to normal now!
