I was watching the first few episodes of the "remastered" Star Trek when they started airing them. They started off subtly enough ("Holy CRAP! I just saw the Gorn BLINK!"), but then they dove right into Big Sweeping Space Scene episodes and thoroughly enjoying themselves.
It's a very nice piece of work -- these guys have a lot of respect for the original series, and it shows.
The only reason we STOPPED recording them was because our DVR was getting full -- we still turn it on if we happen to be up when they're showing it, and it's always a delight to see what they've done.
On a related note, iTunes has all of Star Trek movies, the first season of ST:TOS, and the first season with the remastered effects available for purchase.
Unfortunately, if you compare the new "remastered" episodes against the uncut originals from the recent DVD releases, you'll find that the episodes have still had significant chunks of dialogue and/or entire scenes cut out of them to make room for more commercials... :(
Maybe what I need to do is feed both versions into the video-editing system and make my own re-remastered editions. :)
As for the Tholian Web episode -- it looked good, overall, although since the re-did the ships and the web to look more like the ones we saw in Star Trek: Enterprise's 4th season, I think they should've considered re-doing the viewscreen insert of the Tholian commander to match, as well.
Yes, there are those of us Trekky enough to know that.
I also know that Will Riker was based on William Decker of the cancelled Star Trek Phase II for the first attempt at a Paramount Network. Which later was made into Star Tek the Motion(less) picture.
The clip is just a compilation of the new effects that were put into the remastered version. People have been recording them off of TV as they get aired and putting the FX shots up on YouTube. I don't know why the "no sound" thing, they've just tended to be that way.
They probably would have loved to but didn't have time -- they're on an extremely compressed schedule and keep having to punt on lots of stuff they want to do.
