It doesn't get Skill Focus (Stand-Up Comedy) as a free feat?

Not the base creature, but I'm told that Mongoose Publishing's "Races of Fur" has a ranting template that you could apply.

I like the stats but from what I know of gryphons, there are a couple things that might, if it didn't damage the system, have been missed.

I would say there should be an Init add for hearing, at least equal to other felines.

I would see the damage done by forefeet and hind feet as being different (eagle talons vs lion paws/claws) I'm wondering also if some type of crushing attach would be advisable. Birds of prey have incredibly strong feet. The wings could also be a minor weapon that could be very handy (ask anyone who has ever had to face down a goose how effective wings are as weapons)

Speaking of wings, I also wonder why no aerobatic skills or adds.
Depending on situation it my have the same reaction as the dragon to someone entering seeing gryphons are often guardians of something valuable.

*Looks at first line and fail his resistance roll*
*Tosses a pie at the author that opens to reveal 6 smaller tarts*

Hmm, does that make me a MIRV gryphon?
*Grins and flys out of range*

Well, that's for campaigns where seeing monsters messes with your head. :) For a more standard fantasy game, you just ignore it.

Most of the stats (such as the attack damage) are determined by its size and level. This writeup assumes that the front claws are the ones it usually uses for combat, resorting to raking with the back claws only if it's being grappled. Having two different damage stats for the different types of claws is more granular than Saga Edition generally deals with — a large claw is a large claw, and does 1d6 unless there's some other factor involved.

As for initiative, the griffon's high Perception check makes it very difficult to surprise, meaning that very few creatures will get a free surprise-round action against it. Once regular combat is engaged, however, a griffon's hearing (and actually I based its Perception bonus on its eagle-eye vision) doesn't make it respond any faster than any other critter, so it has a regular Initiative check.

For comparison, you might be interested in a garden-variety (savanna-variety?) lion…

Lion (CL 5 / 4,600 XP)

King of the beasts, baby! Solitary lions will stalk prey and attempt to catch it by surprise. If several lions are operating in groups, males will make themselves visible to prey in an attempt to frighten the prey into the waiting claws of the females, who are stalking it from the other direction. Any "invasion" into lion territory will probably be met by resistance from the males while females attempt to get the cubs to safety.

Large Beast 5
Sanity Loss 0/1d4
Init +5; Senses Perception +8, Low-Light Vision, Scent
Defenses Ref 17 (flat-footed 14), Fort 15, Will 11
hp 42; Threshold 20

Speed 8 squares
Melee 2 claws +8 (1d6+7) and bite +8 (1d8+7) plus grab
Fighting Space 2 squares x 2 squares; Reach 1 square
Base Atk +3; Grp +13

Abilities Str 21/+5, Dex 17/+3, Con 18/+4, Int 2/-1, Wis 12/+1, Cha 6/-2
Feats Skill Training (Climb), Skill Training (Stealth), Weapon Familiarity (Natural Weapons)
Skills Climb +12, Perception +8, Stealth +5, Survival (tracking) +8

Improved Grab A lion that successfully hits with its bite attack may attempt to start a grapple against the same target as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.
Natural Armor A lion's tough hide gives it +3 natural armor.
Pounce A lion may charge and make a full attack (including its two rake attacks) as a full-round action.
Rake If a lion begins its turn grappling a target, it may perform two claw attacks against that target as a swift action. It may also do this if it successfully grabs its target as part of a pounce.
Roar Once per encounter, a lion may make an attack at +0 against the Will defense of all foes within 6 squares. A successful attack inflicts fear for 1 round.

Ah, got it. I can see where the claw/talon difference wouldn't be a factor then. Besides having done GM with creature with several 'weapons' I do understand that is make for slower play.

As for initiative, the griffon's high Perception check makes it very difficult to surprise, meaning that very few creatures will get a free surprise-round action against it...

All too true. Once it's claw to claw/sword/whatever only a small number of senses add to survivability. One aside on this, and probably not useful in the stats but here's a tidbit I got in some of my gryphon/eagle research at http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle2.html on eyesight.
"They have two foveae or centers of focus, that allow the birds to see both forward and to the side at the same time."

That is a distinct advantage in any type of combat. Just gotta love gryphs.
*grin*

Oh and thanks for the lion stats.

You could always send it to Rhode Island and then he'd be Peter Griffin.

That'd be sweet. *ehehehehehehehehe*
