Pounce A griffon may charge and make a full attack as a full-round action. It may not make its rake attacks, as it does not have improved grab.
Rake If a griffon begins its turn grappling a target, it may perform two claw attacks against that target as a swift action.

Date: 2008-08-20 07:42 am (UTC)I would say there should be an Init add for hearing, at least equal to other felines.
I would see the damage done by forefeet and hind feet as being different (eagle talons vs lion paws/claws) I'm wondering also if some type of crushing attach would be advisable. Birds of prey have incredibly strong feet. The wings could also be a minor weapon that could be very handy (ask anyone who has ever had to face down a goose how effective wings are as weapons)
Speaking of wings, I also wonder why no aerobatic skills or adds.
Depending on situation it my have the same reaction as the dragon to someone entering seeing gryphons are often guardians of something valuable.

Hmm, does that make me a MIRV gryphon?
*Grins and flys out of range*

Date: 2008-08-20 11:03 am (UTC)As for initiative, the griffon's high Perception check makes it very difficult to surprise, meaning that very few creatures will get a free surprise-round action against it. Once regular combat is engaged, however, a griffon's hearing (and actually I based its Perception bonus on its eagle-eye vision) doesn't make it respond any faster than any other critter, so it has a regular Initiative check.
For comparison, you might be interested in a garden-variety (savanna-variety?) lion…

Date: 2008-08-20 02:28 pm (UTC)Ah, got it. I can see where the claw/talon difference wouldn't be a factor then. Besides having done GM with creature with several 'weapons' I do understand that is make for slower play.

All too true. Once it's claw to claw/sword/whatever only a small number of senses add to survivability. One aside on this, and probably not useful in the stats but here's a tidbit I got in some of my gryphon/eagle research at http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle2.html on eyesight.
"They have two foveae or centers of focus, that allow the birds to see both forward and to the side at the same time."
That is a distinct advantage in any type of combat. Just gotta love gryphs.
*grin*
Oh and thanks for the lion stats.
