Well, it was pretty much required, wasn't it?

This one was done entirely with markers over light pencil lines. I'd be very interested in critiques of it -- I'm trying to develop new skills. :) I'm interested both in how it works as stand-alone art, as well as how it works as a pic in MLP style.

For MLP style, the eyelids should be the same color as the rest of My Little Gneechy's face. And I'm pretty sure the Manticore is the only time I've seen a lion on the show -- I'm not sure his muzzle had color changes either.

I toyed with the eyelid color/no color issue, and was curious what people might say about it. (Note that Rarity has blue eyelids in many shots, although in her case that might be indicative of mascara.)

The manticore had curly-ques on his muzzle, but was also a very stylized monstrish sort of pseudo-lion.

Well yes, but that's extremely hard to pull off with markers. I did get the colored outlines!

It's not mascara(which colors the eyelashes), it's eyeshadow that causes Rarity's blue eyelids, as she's a very appearance-focused pony. The eyelids also don't have separate demarcation lines.

And the entire MLP style is stylized. So if you're trying for the style, probably want to conform to their constraints, too.

Their Buffalo are also highly stylized.

As are their Zebra.

I think on the fingers, if you'd left the nearest ones not totally divided off from the cream-colored palm, but left the fingers nice and chunky, that'd help.

I think the feet would be be improved by getting the toes in even arcs with a bigger middle toe. Could make the claws more chunky as well on toes and fingers. A thicker tail might be more in-line with the style of the show.

Face is quite good. Eyeglasses could be a bit thicker in the frame, more cartoony.

The slightly darkened tone for shading the far limbs is good work at matching the style of the show's shading.

I'd say the lighter colored eyes are fine, as a lion. if going all equine, then i'd say to make the face/eyes an even tone.

By stylized, I meant "in the style of a monster." :) And yes, eyeshadow, not mascara. Tired Gneech is losing his vocabulary. ;)

At the risk of playing devil's advocate, Zecora has a colored muzzle, so she cuts both ways. ;) Of the two, the muzzle is probably more key to still retaining enough hints of my own style while still being compatible with the MLP style.

I would guess that a lion design for the show would be all yellow with no highlight colors at all (including belly), now that I think about it.

re: fingers, you mean just get rid of the brown line between the palm and the finger?

re: feet, I'm not sure what you mean an even arc. Do you mean just making a single arc shape with dividing lines, rather than three separate "bumps"?

Hehehe very awesome. I'm glad that you did the colored lines even though they can be a pain in the ass to do with real media. I'm also very glad that you went against the curb and didn't make it a pony with a lion's tail. (Insert personal gripe about that) :P
