Workspace Woes
Feb. 8th, 2005 11:14 amI suppose doing a Google search for Kathy Ireland pics to reference for this Tiffany pinup idea I want to work on would probably not be a good idea while I'm supposed to be working, would it?
I suppose, for that matter, drawing a Tiffany pinup in my sketchbook wouldn't be a good idea at work either.
But ... wanna work on art! Now! While I'm awake and have energy and an open space to work in! Not tonight, when I'm tired and worn out and have to shove all the junk from one side of the desk to the other because there's no friggin' room in the place!
Feh.

Art! Woohoo!
Feb. 8th, 2005 11:35 pmMan, that felt great. ^.^ I spent the entire evening (pretty much) on a single piece of artwork, all real media, pencil sketch, then ink on bristol, then marker colors.
I have a tendency to lean too much on Photoshop. When I'm inking for the strip, I just splash it all over the place, 'cause I know I'm going to be cleaning it up and putting in the lettering and stuff anyway. But the problem with that is that I'm never happy with how my original colored art comes out at cons and such.
So tonight, I challenged myself: do the best piece I possibly could with all original medium, and NO MAJOR MISTAKES. I have always had trouble "staying inside the lines," and markers in particular don't have a lot of flexibility. You squidge a little too much on there, and you've suddenly got a BIG DARK SPLOTCH on your piece!
And, at the risk of sounding insufferably pleased with myself, I did it! There was a little trouble with the ink lines smearing (WTF? maybe I needed to let the ink dry a little longer), but that was minimal and mostly happened in areas of the pic that were supposed to be darker anyway. I think this may very well be the first time that I've ever actually been satisfied with the results of real media work ... and it's something of a big moment for me. :) After discussing it some with![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
codyfrost, who is a genius at marker work, and giving it time to "settle in," I'll probably do a few tweaks and revisions, but again, that'll be with the markers and not the computer, as part of the exercise.
It's nice ... for a change ... to not feel like a hack. :) Maybe my hopes of someday having stuff worthy to go into art shows at cons are not so far-fetched after all.
In case you're wondering, BTW, the artwork will go on display a week from Friday as a regular SJ strip. So no, I'm not going to link to it here. ;) Really, more than anything else, I just wanted to savor the moment, is all. But it's close to midnight now, and I really need to hit the hay. So g'nite, world, and have a wonderful tomorrow!
