Well THAT Was a Long Book!
Oct. 1st, 2006 10:59 amLast night, after
graveyardgreg went off the air and
mammallamadevil retired for the evening, I finally finished The Most of P.G. Wodehouse. This is a big honkin' anthology of Wodehouse's various series -- Eggs, Beans and Crumpets; Mr. Mulliner; Ukridge; Lord Emsworth; Jeeves and Wooster; and Quick Service, a stand-alone novel.
Bottom line: didn't care for Ukridge, will have to look into more Lord Emsworth. I can see why Jeeves & Wooster is the most popular of his creations, they're definitely the most likeable. I also noticed that he uses a lot of the same bits over and over, from the idea of distributing prizes at a school treat to the phrase "he moved, he stirred, he seemed to feel, the rush of life along his keel." This can start to lead to a kind of "if you've read one you've read 'em all" feel after a while, but I suspect that's inevitable when you are looking at such a large body of work spanning the man's entire adult life.
I think now I'm going to have to take a break from Wodehouse, as much as I like him, tho -- after that massive a dose, it's definitely time for something else.
