How can anyone resist those eyes, that bad Maurice Chevalier/Charles Boyer imitation, the endless Algiers references?

Well I certainly can't; grabbing second breakfast at Starbucks this morning, I was compelled beyond all reason to pick up a Pepe Le Pew finger puppet ... utterly adorable and only $2.95. :) Back when there were still WB stores, they had a little mechanical Pepe in the pose above, who lazily waved his tail back and forth while singing something incomprehensible because the motor noise drowned it out. I loved those things and wanted one, but I was never willing to spend the money required (and I'm still not). But a $2.95 finger puppet, I can afford!

Oh, and there was candy too, which I immediately discarded. Feh!

Pepe Le Pew is the only WB character I've drawn in recent memory; I know that I've drawn Bugs in the past, but I don't remember how it came out and I don't think I have it any more anyway. I was fairly pleased with Pepe, but as it was a copy, rather than an original drawing, it only counts half.



I think, during my wads and wads of free drawing time, that I might try to teach myself to draw him freehand from memory, just for the fun of it. :) Pepe's always been my favorite of the "second-tier" WB characters, and I'd like to be able to play around with him some.

Well thanks! My impression is that Chuck's stuff (particularly his non-animated stuff) is a lot looser and more flowing than mine; it wouldn't surprise me if it was a Chuck Jones picture I was copying. Or somebody latter-day freelancer for WB's art department who was mimicking Master Jones... :)

Some of my earliest memories of animation are Chuck Jones' adaptation of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi ... now THAT was some gorgeous work!

Cool! Pepe rocks. :) He's been one of my favorite characters. Then again, I also like the chicken hawk (just a name for a Red-tailed hawk) and the little ravenous weasel. *snickers*

I love that little chicken hawk. Frickin' hilarious. :) It doesn't hurt I'm a big fan of red-tailed hawks as well. And I'm not sure I ever heard a name for the weasel either. But he was always funny when he was around, because it usually meant Leghorn was gunna get the crud beat out of him near the end of the episode. :)

Eric Costello's Warner Bros. Cartoon Companion (http://members.aol.com/EOCostello/index.html) is an impressive compilation of character data and cultural references. Costello doesn't have an entry for the weasel, which suggests that he has no name, despite appearing in at least two cartoons (Weasel Stop and Weasel While You Work, I think).

Pepe is my favorite second tier as well! I think every girl would like her hunny to have a Pepe side! Ee's so sweet! So teut sweet!

I used to love when Valentine's Day would roll around at the WB stores, because they'd bring out all the Pepe Le Pew stuff! All I have now are Pepe & Penelope salt & pepper shakers and, from WalMart of all places, Pepe & Penelope pajamas with matching slippers. *le sigh*

The big mess(e) on the walls from having my head explode. Unless of course I misremembered that translation and accidentally said that my uncle's dresser was next to my aunt's desk and then asking where the library was. Memories of high school French (le français du lycée, ou simplement le franglais) are coming gushing back like an upset swimming pool of marshmallow creme (la crème guimauve).

Hrm, just looked it up in Harrap's old-skool dead tree dictionary, and indeed I stand corrected. That is, had I been speaking vrai-français instead of mocque-français which merely looked surprisingly similar. Had this been actual French, I would likely have said "éclaboussure" instead, which aforementioned dictionary thingy cites as the ever-useful "splatter (n.)".

And Babelfish gives "desodre" (not gonna look up the accent mark), so I know they're not exactly the most literal translators either....

Actually, I always found the "Pepe + Penelope" merchandise a little weird, considering that in the cartoons she was always fleeing from him in terror! ;)

I find generally women are of two minds on Pepe... some women love the character since the see him as being romantic. Others disparage him because basically the whole premise of the short is sexual harrassement.

What I find odd about it is that it's Penelope and not Farbrette! She was the Creole kitty who stunk herself up in the Limburger factory under the idea of, "If you can't beat zem, join zem!"

It depends on the circumstance. However, speaking as one who has been persued in such a manner more than once @;) sometimes, yeah...it's annoying. But sometimes...*le sigh!* @:) I think a lot of women don't realize that they enjoy Ze Chase. The problem is that, nowadays, it just seems too dangerous. It sends up too many red flags. But when you sense it comiong from a safe source, ladies, let them chase you a little. It makes being caught all ze sweeter!

Awww! No weasel entry! That bites. He's great. Sure, he only had two cartoons he appeared in, but for us mustelid types, thats 2 more than we usually get. Foghorn refered to him as that "Cotton Pickin' Weasel", or something like that. Not really a name, but it still bites that he's not in the entry.

Yeah, you gotta admire Pepe Le Pew. He is always persistent and never gives up. You'd think that he'd wise up after being rejected so many times by Penelope. But, such is love. A very nice sketch indeed Mr. The Gneech of Pepe Le Pew. It really looks like the real mccoy.

Something very interesting I found in Halliwell’s 2002 Film and Video Guide: Boyer never actually said “Come with me to the Casbah” in Algiers.
