As far as Leonard is concerned, don't forget that he is an anthro, civilized and has access to great medical help.
So, in the strip's universe a lion could reach the age of a RL human, in the 70+ range. The danger, of a short life span in SJ, does not lie in the infirmites of age, or medical help, for most species, but that of predation.
