For your present, here's the opening sequence to a Japanese live-action Spider-Man show. I suspect that only Japanese pop culture would come to the conclustion that giant transforming robots and Spidey made a good combination. ¬.¬ It was kinda neat to see Spidey climbing Tokyo Radio Tower, tho...

Blame [livejournal.com profile] softpaw. ;)

Oops! I meant blame [livejournal.com profile] jonasbagel! Sorry, Softpaw!

Ah, but Marvel Comics did, as well, in 1985. I have this issue, even.

This is Spiderman. On TV. In Japan.

If you liked that, you'd probably enjoy the entire first episode of Spiderman (Japan, 1978) (http://tvinjapan.blogspot.com/2006/05/entire-first-episode-of-japanese.html). From the always awesomely weird TV In Japan (http://tvinjapan.blogspot.com).

At the time (I'd say either late '60s or early '70s) the exchange rate was about ¥360 = $1, which works out to be about $11. By the mid 1970s (¥300 = $1), it'd be about $13.

My mistake! It was Jonas -- it's just your post-with-a-link was next to his post-with-a-link and I got 'em screwed up. Sorry. :)

Seriously, that's hilarious. My friend wanted to show me that for a while but we never got around to it.
As for giant robots? It's in JAPAN. You can't expect to stand a chance in Japan without some sort of giant robot, y'know! Every villain has one!
