I must disagree; the very first time I encountered Elmo it was instant hatred, and he's only gotten worse since then. He's exactly emblematic of all the crap that Sesame Street was better than, originally.
The real problem with Elmo is that he's a little f-ing prima donna who wasted no time taking over the show. There is not supposed to be a "star" of Sesame Street, and if there is, it should be a character created by Jim Henson.
