I have not seen any of the new Doctor Who episodes; so I can't give a fair assessment. But it is my considered opinion that if the Doctor is carbonating fangirl hormones, something is fundamentally off-kilter somewhere.

The Doctor/Romana angle was understated enough that you wanted to ignore it, you easily could. I liked McGann, but I disliked the faux-romance thing they threw into the Fox production. I get the impression that the new Doctor is even worse.

Pfui. Keep your sex out of my Doctor Who! Keep it cerebral and slightly goofy, please.

YES DAMNIT.

You heard the man, Doctor, Rose - stop snogging already!

It would never work, you know. She's twenty, he's nine hundred. And that's just IQ points.

We just got the 2nd part of "parting the ways". I'd say more, but there's no spoiler tags on lj and I don't know what Gneech has seen. I heard something about a special "christmas invasion" episode, but I don't know what that was or if/when it will air here in the good ol' U.S.

I haven't seen anything since the Fox special, so don't worry 'bout spoilers. :) Doctor Who has never been about continuity anyway.

I believe I saw the Christmas invasion episode at a con a couple weeks back. I mean there was an invasion, at Christmas. But the Doctor's new form was fairly unconscious for the better part of it, though one of the few times that the Doctor reacted was when Rose said to him, "Doctor, I need your help." But that was implied that almost a reflex reaction rather than any conscious activity. The big revelation is that the lady PM wasn't quite as pure as the Doctor had thought.

Agreement! Agreement! *gag*

People are writing rather disturbing fanfic from McGann onwards...gah! Brain splodey....it makes it hard to get into the series, just because of the pictures it makes in my head. Fortunately people are beating me on the head to actually see the episodes...it's worth it. If you can fast-forward through the bits where they throw all sanity to the wind and imply that a 900+ year old alien can fall in cutesy-wootsey wuv with a 20-something Earthling, the production values are awesome and they've really done good things with the show. :)

I dunno... More Girls In Fandom is a *good* thing. I remember going to see SW:Ep3 and was like "what the hell are all these little hotties doing here???" Where I'm from, fandom was 90 percent male.

Heather is one of those Dr Who fangirls with the percolatin' hormones. She even made a fan music video that's been doing well on youtube.

I was pretty opposed to the whole "shippy" angle... but after watching it for two seasons (thank you bittorrent!) I can say that it's not really so bad. There's nothing wrong with a Companion being smitten in lurve with The Doctor, and The Doctor never actually returns those feelings onscreen. But of course he cares about his Companions.

More Girls In Fandom is fine and dandy, as long as they're there for the whole fantasy/SF thing and not just 'cause it's the current trend in squee. Same with More Boys In Fandom. Same is true of the furry fandom -- I love seeing it grow, but I want it to grow because more people are getting into furry, not just because it's a fad.

I'm an old fan of Dr. Who from way back, and I think that what Russell Davies has done with the show is incredible. Understand it is not the same show. There is less cheese and more continuity and character development.

The stories are terribly personal and very well written.

I wholly respect your decision to steer clear of it as it is very different from traditional Who, but if you catch an episode with Eccleston, I would recommend "Father's Day".

I haven't been steering clear of it, so much as just not intersecting with it. Doctor Who is something I catch if I happen to be watching TV late Saturday night; but since I started doing the comics, I never watch TV any more. I'd like to see it, actually, snogging or no ... but it's sitting in the stack with all the other things I'd like to see, too. :)

Good choice (IMO). I also like the following two parter, "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances", a very creepy horror-esque story in 1941 London and the well written wrap-up. Enjoyable plot twists in that pair.

Well for me, shippy is all about possibilities. I guess its just that the looks that the Doctor and Rose give each toher and the SHAMELESS flirting that is going on in the series.

I can't help it, Gneech. I'm a hopeless romantic! And I thought you were one too! But hey! It's funny, LOTS OF ACTION (see season two's "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit" two-parter), loads of history, really good CGI aliens... Just... It's awesome.

When I first heard of the concept (Humanoid alien with a time-machine in the shape of a police box), I was really like... "WTFOMG?" I've grown up on Star Trek because of my father and I was used to all of the "everything makes sense". So when [livejournal.com profile] goodluckfox said "It's science fiction, IT'S BRITISH, you'll love it!!!"

And me: "Well... Okay... I'll watch the first episode"

Now look at me!

Granted, I've only seen the 2005/2006 serials of it and I haven't seen the series that you grow up on.

Just hey, give it a shot. PWEASE, Gneech-sama!

I'm a romantic in romantic contexts; the context of Doctor Who is that he's a crotchety, eccentric, superintelligent weirdo from another planet who has all sorts of peculiar adventures across time and space.

If various companions and supporting characters fall in love right and left, I'm all for it -- their whole purpose is to humanize the series. But not the Doctor. His whole purpose is to alienize it. It's like having a romance between Gandalf and Eowyn. Just makes no sense.

Yes, but the "forbidden romance" aspect isn't all that humanizing. Look at it this way, do you REALLY believe that some guy could go running around the universe for 900+ years and not get LAID occasionally? OY!

Seriously, though, his monolougs can be pretty interesting at times. I do dislike his constant "You humans are so NEAT!" declarations where the bald apes stand around and don't go "What? Like you're not a human too?"

I don't mind the romance. It enrichens the flavor of the series. Yes, the Doctor is an alien from another planet who isn't human, but he's in love with the human race and eventually he's bound to find someone where things click in that just-so-special way that only comes by every thousand years or so.

I shall point out that in the first series, the Doctor has a granddaughter. In another it's said that he's half-human (as in human mother), though this isn't supported elsewhere. And the Doctor in this series isn't as crotchety - his personality changes a bit with every incarnation of the Doctor. However, he has repeatedly told Rose he will not get involved with anyone because he knows it will only be a short time before he loses them (is this the writers' way of saying stop with the shipping?) There is one kiss I've seen on screen with the new Doctor, and that was Madame Pompadour who kissed him at random. He seemed quite shocked.

I've got a couple of the older ones on my computer and on DVD; should I bring them with me to Atlanta so you can have a look?

If you like the shippy Doctor, try finding stuff from the Tom Baker era with the companion Romana; she was a Time Lady, so that was the one relationship that actually could have worked, both emotionally and genetically.

In fact, Tom Baker and Lalla Ward did get married. The Doctor and Romana, on the other hand, went their separate ways; she eventually became President of Gallifrey, IIRC.

Yes they were, briefly :(

I've been e-mailing back and forth with a friend in the land of Oz who couldn't understand Romana's becoming president of Gallifrey because when she last appeared in the series, she was becoming a renegade in e-Space to escape the controlling nature of the Time Lord government, and didn't understand why she'd want to go back. The only answer I could think of is that she regenerated while in e-Space and her new personality didn't object to returning.

I wonder if they'll confirm whether she and the other Time Lord companions/enemies survived Gallifrey going kablooey or whether they were among the dead.

It happened at some point between the McGann revival attempt and the first episode of the Ninth Doctor series. It's mentioned in a non-canon Eighth Doctor novel, but the canonicity of the novel hasn't been confirmed.

In the second episode of the 2005 series, he mentions that the Time Lords were destroyed in a Time War, which we later find out pitted the Time Lords against the Daleks. The Time Lords defeated the Daleks but destroyed themselves at the same time. Since several Daleks have appeared since, it casts doubt on whether all the Time Lords were wiped out.

With the help of the Aussie friend I mentioned, I can only think of four Time Lords/Ladies that could have survived: Susan, the Meddling Monk (whose Tardis was disabled some time in the Middle Ages), the Rani, and Draxx. The Master could have survived, since he's cheated death before, but since he fell into the Eye of Rassilon in the McGann movie, he's likely dead. Don't know about Romana or anyone else.

Other than that, the only Time Lords who could conceivably exist are the ones imprisoned on Shada and Professor Chronotis at Cambridge University, but since the Adams estate is rather picky about allowing his creations to be used by others, they probably won't show up any time soon.

Let's not forget to mention that this latest episode had the bad guy accusing the Doctor as being responsible for destroying Gallifrey.

Date: 2006-06-14 01:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dhlawrence.livejournal.com
I forgot about that bit until someone mentioned it later. When I was reminded of it, I thought that he admitted it in a wave of guilt.

In one of the novels of dubious canonicity, the Eighth Doctor is actually responsible for destroying Gallifrey, but it can somehow be restored from his memory (figure that one out!)

Considering Steven Moffet (Coupling) has been writing alot of episodes lately, it would follow suit that there is alot more focus on relationships in the new episodes.

But if you are that upset by all the innuendo between the Doctor and Rose, you are in for some serious torture when Sarah Jane Smith returns in an episode of Season 2.

AND Sarah Jane and K-9 come back in season 2! "School Reunion". Lots of character development. Why Sarah is mad of why the Doctor didn't come back for her, she thought he was dead, how she didn't like having to go back to having a "normal" life. Etc.

And also Rose realizing that there were other companions before her and she gets pissed at the Doctor for "Is THAT my future? Just one day you'll leave me?"

And also we get to see Rose/Sarah Jane get into a mini-cat fiht but later team up against the Doctor.

Great episode. K-9 is so sweet. The cutest voice-over I've EVER EVER heard of.

Sorry, hon... but somebody shook up my carbonated fangirl hormones and there's nothing that can be done about it.

Now, that may say something about this incarnation of the Doctor... or it could say something about my taste in gents... but, nonetheless, there it is.

I'm no newcomer to Who. I've watched all of the incarnations. Some I liked better than others. But none had whatever magical fangirl combination of looks/goofiness/charm/intensity that Doctor v.9 has.

Hmmm...John, ya need to watch the show.

I've watched this whole season through, and was very disappointed when it ended. Looking forward to season 2, though I am majorly bummed they aren't keeping Chris, yep this girl is a fangirl. *grin* Why, you might ask? Because he is a very good actor, he showed he cared about his companions without getting overly personally involved. There is no doubt he loves Rose, but is not "in love" with Rose. Big difference.

The one and only kiss they shared was necessary...but that is all I am going to explain, due to spoilers.

Captain Jack kissed both the Doctor and Rose, before he left on a mission he knew he wouldn't survive, and it was a goodbye quick type kiss.

Other kisses involved Rose's mom kissing her goodbye, Rose kissing her boyfriend Mickey, and Rose's Mom and Dad kissing. None were long, drawn out romantic types, and were simply normal behavior type responses for the relationships portrayed. Sure there are some flirting and sillyness between Rose and the Doctor, but you can tell they don't take it seriously, so why should the fans? On top of that, it's funny.

The episodes that really got me was "The Empty Child" and it's sequel "The Doctor Dances." Those two are extremely good, but overall, I would say the whole series was awesome!

I loved it, I was so hoping they would keep Chris, but as long as they keep Billie in the show and David manages to keep Chris' style, I'll be happy.

I'm a long time fan of Tom Baker, and I saw alot of his style and humor in Chris' portrayal of the Doctor. Basically Chris is a tough act to follow, I hope David is up for it.
