Okay. So. Parking lots make people stoopid. This is old news. But even parking lots usually have their limits.

But apparently, some people can't take a cold parking space, they have to have one that people have been sitting in, so it's warm. Or something.

It seems the only possible explanation, when there are two empty spaces in the next row over, and a completely empty row just beyond that, and yet two prize specimens get into a lurking duel to get our parking space when we pull out.

Two empty spaces. Two would-be parkers. But nope, those aren't good enough. They have to have our space or none.

WTF.

A friend of mine -- just which friend, I can't recall -- referred to the "lurking for parking places" behavior as sharking, which has kinda stuck. "Look at this jerk, sharking me." It's especially apt when a car follows you around the parking lot as you're WALKING TO YOUR CAR, hoping to snag your space. You can just hear the JAWS theme.

I'm a big enough jerk that when someone does that, I'll make a big show of opening the trunk, putting my bags in, closing it, and WALKING AWAY FROM THE CAR -- even if my intent was, in fact, to leave.

Of course a mean thing to do is to walk to any other car, but your own, act all surprised and shocked. Then run over to the person, who has been following you and say, "Can you help me? I think my car has been stolen!" Do this is a really exicted voice and mannerism. :=3

At the very least they will leave, which will then let you leave in peace. They might even leave to find a cop and then they will be explaining to the cop what just happened. If you give a description, give one that is so outrageous that no one will be stopped: i.e. a purple 2003 VW Beetle with (your state tags) 666-DEV. :=3

I vote for: when you see them doing it, pull back into the spot, get out of the car, then go sit on the trunk or rear bumper. Smile beatifically and wave at both cars and wait until they go away.
