"Okay, I've got a question for you then," Brigid said.

"Oh?" said Greg. "Fire away, young porcupine."

"Well, I've always wanted to know just what it means to strike like thunderball. I gather it's something that people who look at this world and want it all do ... but that's as far as I get."

"Oh!" said Greg. "Well ... it's ... um..."

"You don't know either," Brigid said.

"Certainly I do!" said Greg. "Don't be ridiculous!"

"Well then what is it?"

"It's ... er..."

"Yes...?"

Greg blinked, moistened his lips and thought for a long moment. "No," he finally said, tossing a hand into the air. "You're right. I haven't a clue. It's utter gibberish as far as I can make out. A complete non sequitur."

Brigid nodded. "That's what I thought."

"Still," said Greg. "Tom Jones. That's got to be worth something."

"Absolutely!" Brigid replied. "That part was never in dispute."

Tom Jones is always worth something.

But a quick google on the phrase reveals thet no-one else has a clue what it means either.

It's one of the eternal mysteries of the univers, like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

Thing is, you're querying the wrong sources. You have to ask the Moonraker. The Moonraker knows.

I believe I read Thunderball used to be a slang for a nuclear weapon. So striking like one of those would be, ostensibly, fairly quick and effective?

To quote Death.

"Cl. The other hand makes the Ap sound."

rather he said it MORE LIKE THIS....

Actually, Tom Jones sang the title song from the James Bond movie Thunderball, starring Sean Connery, released in 1965.

The gist of the movie is that "SPECTRE" stole 2 nuclear bombs, and, as mentioned by Vince, that is where the term "thunderball" comes from; nukes.

So, striking like a thunderball would be like striking like a nuclear weapon; as Vince pointed out.

The composer of the song, John Barry, appeared on the Public Radio show Fresh Air some years ago and explained his dilemma...

There's no songs about villains. You know, people don't sit down and write songs about villains...

No, Kiel played the henchman of the villain in Moonraker! What I meant was, if you're going to take one set of lyrics for a Bond movie theme seriously, take them all seriously. :)
