So imagine for a minute there's something you like to do ... play tennis for instance. And imagine you've got a nice day, a free court, and all the time you can eat.

And imagine that when the moment comes up, you find yourself in the odd position of wanting to do anything but tennis.

Does this kind of thing happen to you? Because it happens to me a lot, and for the life of me I can't figure out why.

A book I've been dying to read sits on the nightstand, unopened.

Monday's comic is still not drawn yet.

A story I've been wanting to write is just a scribbled hash of notes.

Anything but.

Why the heck does this happen? And more importantly, how do I overcome it?

Just as you can't Kill The Stoopid, you can't Fight Genius and have to wait for the right moment. I say let it come naturally, or it'll end up pulling a Louis landing facefirst in the Chest of Forced Deadlines, which means... um... *brain loses the joke* Well, you know what I mean. I just wanted to make a Louis/Leona reference. :P

Maybe do some gaming planning for your next D&D game? I know the feeling; I don't want to do much of anything today either.

Lizard Rat out.

its happened to me more then once. My strategy is usually there is something else I wanted to do. Some practice or event that was different then my original plan. The thing is the more I fight that urge the more I don't want to do things I thought were fun or that I wanted to do. So by now when this feeling occurs I sit back and think about it for a minuet or two and try to think about what else I could do that day and something pops into my head like say... run around the block or organize my bookshelf and once I do that I feel better about doing something else... I call it a MCE or Mental Compulsion Event...

I think I know how you feel... when I've got some bid deadline and something major to work on, my brain keeps trying to interest me in some completely different enormous task. :/ Case in point; I'm working on an appellate brief right now, but my brain is trying to get me to start researching all the yummy upgrades I've got planned for [livejournal.com profile] kheetor84's computer.

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer. If I come up with something, I'll let you know. For me, it's usually a sign of being tired/burned out.

Oh, sure. I get like that all the time.

I do stuff I don't have to want to do to be able to do.

And eventually it equals itself out. But sometimes, honestly, it doesn't, and you just have to ride it out, or make yourself do what yous hould be doing.

That happens to me a lot, especially when I don't have much time.

Finding the right mood can be tricky if it's "I don't feel like doing anything" instead of "I don't feel like doing this thing." You can either force yourself to do that stuff or you can figure out what you do feel like doing.

Or maybe you just need to relax and have some tea.

I get that way, too. But then you get days where you're a BUNDLE OF OMG ENERGY! This week's and next week's NNs and Doemains are pencilled. But I'm too hyper to ink just yet. *SPAZ*

] My dad once told me, "You can always find time to do anything but what you're supposed to be doing." I think that he was using the royal you instead of talking to me directly.

I've found two reasons for it.

1. Since I'm *suppposed* to do it, it's not fun anymore.
2. Lack of self-confidence. It's one thing to finish something under pressure, late at night, etc. - if it's good, great! If it sucked, you can use all the excuses you want, because you weren't at your best. It's not *your* fault.

Sad, isn't it?
