The Hobbit to happen, after all.

I just hope they get Ian Holm as Bilbo again. :)

"films?" Hobbit and a sequel? What sequel?

The Hobbits, Part I and II, presumably ... probably with rousting the Necromancer out of Dol Gildur as an explicit part of the story instead of a rumbling undercurrent that keeps yanking Gandalf out of the story.

One's going to be The Hobbit and the other is going to be a movie bridging the gap between it and LOTR--hopefully not original material...

Of course, what this really all means is....

A mega huge 20 DVD box set of all 5 movies, plus the 'Making Of/Behind the Scenes', Interviews, and IMDB susbscription so you can keep up with all the actors in future. Complete with its own coffee table to support it on.

I am both highly elated by this news - I swore I wouldnt watch any Hobbit film that Jackson didn't have a hand in - and deeply disturbed by the news they're making it into two movies. I don't think that's good at all, and smacks of a moneymaking decision rather than a story/film one.

Really, it depends ... if it makes room for Beorn, I'm in favor. ;) I'd like to see a White Council v. the Necromancer smackdown, assuming it was done well.

I'm afraid that Holm is too old now to convincingly play a young Bilbo. I imagine they will find an actor who looks as much like him as possible, though.

Serkis and McKellen have both said they're definitely interested, so that's two out of the way. Now we just need Weaving to sign on too.

cheers,
Phil

Good news indeed. Being set from the start as two movies they should be able to cover the book completely. I just hope it is well done.

IT would be great if they could get Ian Holm again. But I seem to remember something in the LOTR commentaries about the makeup they used to make him look young in the flashback was EXCEEDINGLY uncomfortable. Something about tape being used to pull all of the wrinkles back.
