I remember reading a poem in school that was a mashup of pop culture references, I'm guessing from the Beat era; sort of a precursor to things like R.E.M.'s "End of the World" or Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." The only part I remember clearly are the last two lines:

Burn, baby, burn!
No deposit, no return.

Unfortunately, I'm blanking on the rest of the poem, or the poet. Anybody out there know what I'm thinking of?

I can think of about 4 or 5 songs that have either line in them. But that's all.

Yup, that's just the problem; they're such popular lines that putting them into Google isn't useful because there are too many hits.

**google**

...Yeah! The first couple of pages are pretty much the songs I could list. And there's your entry tucked in there, too!

All I can think of is the album "This is the Day, This is the Hour" by Pop Will Eat Itself. The song "The Fuses Have Been Lit" has the refrain "No deposit, No Return", but a different song has a sample "Burn Baby Burn" ... might not even be on the same album. Hrm.

The "Burn Baby Burn" I was thinking of is from Age of Chance's "We Got Trouble". Similar band but totally different song/album. Both album covers designed by The Designers Republic.

Could it be Langston Hughes? We overdosed on that stuff in middle and high school.
