I Miss Turning Away Work :P

I used to have no trouble whatsoever finding a job.
I used to have people call me up and offer me jobs out of the blue.
I used to think about whether I should stay at the job I had, or jump ship to a higher-paying job with longer hours.
I used to have money.
I wonder if this is what the depression was like?
I sent off a ton of resumes tonight ... but I've been sending off tons of resumes since August, with no luck.
I applied to the new Starbucks being built across the street, that has a huge "Now Hiring" sign up out front. They haven't responded.
Borders said their corporate office said specifically not to rehire me. They wouldn't tell me why.
I'm feeling a bit put upon.

Date: 2002-02-03 06:27 pm (UTC)I know it is hard, since I don't have any work experience, but I want to help. I'm sure that others want to help you too. I'm sure there are people who already are. ;)
Keep your chin up! Good things happen to good people.

Date: 2002-02-03 06:52 pm (UTC)That's so rude of Border's, esp. since they won't tell you why!
(though are you sure that it's not just the mgt at the one, passing the buck?)
Some thoughts about searching for work...
Date: 2002-02-03 10:55 pm (UTC)Have you read What Color Is Your Parachute? Or any other of the books for creating a plan for what you're looking for?
What kind of work are you looking for? What would be your perfect job? What are the most important things that you're looking for in a job?
Which of your many talents are you hoping to use for work?
What restrictions do you have on what kind of work you'll do? What won't you touch?
And... is your resume online?

I was going to use my severance pay to spend some time at home teaching myself enough Java to get an entry-level programming job, to move away from the graphics and web design field, which I had been getting burned out on. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an entry-level programming job. Nor, anymore, is there such thing as a graphics or web design job.

As far as Border's is concerned, I'd call coporate and ask to talk to the HR dept. I do believe, though I may be wrong, they have to tell you the reason they don't want to re-hire you, especially if you left on "good terms".
I can't see a corporation singling out an employee for non-rehire unless that employee pulled a "Dover" or was caught stealing from the company, ect. I don't believe that you would be guilty of that. It could be that the management is afraid that you will be working there and might "jump ship" when a better job opens. If you have a friend in that particualr store that is in management, may he/she can tell you the real reason for the non-rehire bit.
I sure hope things get better for you as they did me. As always, I'm here if you need to talk.
