It's weird how a particular detail can cause a character or place to suddenly "become real" in your head, even when you don't know the other details yet. I now have the groundwork for the major setting of my next RPG campaign, and quite possibly my next book, all because I wanted to figure out a good reason for a town to exist in this particular spot and so put a geographic feature there.

Nifty. :)

So... do your players get any hints?

Yes, when I have more details worked out. If you have any preferences, now's the time to make them known!

Dunno what to base them around. What's the geographic feature?

Well, I meant broader campaign preferences. :)

The geographical feature is essentially a waterfall and lake with a town built around it.

You should follow Shamus Young's guide to building a city.

Note... Shamus is the guy who did DM of the Rings. Figured you might wanna see this. :)
