Egypt's Military FTW

BBC News: Egypt's army has vowed it will not use force against the tens of thousands of people protesting for the removal of the regime of President Hosni Mubarak.

I haven't said much about Egypt because I am keenly aware of my ignorance in the matter. I will say, however, that this can only be good news. :)

My favourite story out of Egypt is the bands of civilians forming human chains around the museums. There has been some looting, but there are enough young people who take their history seriously, which gives me hope for the future!

I was hopeful on this, they've been letting the protesters up on the tanks, taking pictures with them, etc. Early on there were reports of them tossing facemasks to the protesters when the police forces started to use tear gas. I really hope they will also step in if the police/establishment forces get too rough.

From what I've read, the police have essentially abandoned the streets. So if there is order to be kept, the army will be doing it.

In Egypt, the army has a MUCH better reputation then the police.

And if the army isn't going to fire on the citizenry, and the police have abandoned the streets, what does that tell you about the government's situation?

He came up through the Air Force, so I think he had a clue on that. Problem is, most of the troops have the same problems as the citizenry...poverty.

What will be telling is when the Police, who are part of Mubarek's internal security apparatus, start shooting and murdering protestors. Will the army just stand there? Or will the army act to protect the protestors?
