"You're So Weird!" "You Have NO Idea..."
May. 1st, 2004 05:27 pmNot too long ago,
lythandra gave me The Lion King Special Edition DVD, and I finally got around to watching some of it today. It's been a long time since I watched TLK, and I'd forgotten how much I liked it -- particularly Ol' Set-Chewer himself, Jeremy Irons, and the animators who were inspired by his performance with Scar.
There's a wonderful intelligence to Scar, not only in his scheming nature, but also in his throwaway quips and bits of banter; he's a character who spends most of his time simply trying to amuse himself, because most of his ideas just go way over the head of anyone around him. Anybody who isn't cut from the normal cloth (oh yeah, like anybody like THAT reads my LJ) can instantly relate, I suspect.
And amuse himself he does; almost every piece of dialog or gesture, even his little tippy-toe dance on the line "a bright, shining era is tip-toeing nearer," is playful, almost silly, all of which is lost on the others around him. Scar is a never-ending study in somebody who ends up talking to themselves because it's the only way they can be assured of intelligent conversation. If he wasn't amoral, totally self-centered, and eventually homocidal (in the sense that killing Mufasa was murder, while eating a gazelle would not be), Scar would actually be a pretty cool guy to know.
So in honor of poor, misguided, but otherwise likeable Scar, I have created a new icon. :)
