On this evening, once known as Twelfth Night, medieval participants celebrated the conclusion of the Yule season. They typically drank sweetened, spiced ale or wine from two-handled "loving cups," which were crafted for sharing. The name was derived from the 13th-century Norse drinking slautation waes hail, which meant "be thou healthy" and is closely related to the modern words whole and holy. Wassail later became any festivity or accompanying imbibement. But in Customs and Fashions in Old New England (1893) Alice Morse Earle mentioned the prohibition of toasting: "In 1630 [Massachusetts] governor Winthrop abolished the 'vain custom' of drinking healths at his table, and in 1639 the court publicly order the cessation of the practice because 'it was a thing of no use — it induced drunkenness and quarrelling, it wasted time and beer, and it was troublesome to many, forcing them to drink more than they wished.' A fine of twelve shillings was imposed on each health-drinker."

Computer No Worky
Jan. 6th, 2009 10:37 pmPosting from lythandra's computer, because mine has apparently become hosed. GORT is quite the lemon, it seems. >.< Currently it will call up a desktop and even put icons on it, but as soon as you try to interact with it, the hard drive starts going "grind, grind, grind, grind" and everything comes to a halt.
The problem started while I was in the midst of a LotRO game and things went from "slow" to "dead slow" to "completely nonresponsive." Several hard power-downs and reboots later, the thing is now so much dead weight on my desk. I'm going to keep messing with it for a bit longer, but I'm more than a little afraid that I have a $900 brick on my desk.
Y'know, at one point this time last month, we were talking about gettinglythandra a new computer. Maybe we can get a good deal on a 2-for-1 special. -.-

Computer Update
Jan. 6th, 2009 11:57 pmGORT is back in the land of the living at the moment. Right now my tentative diagnosis is overheating. I found Buddha-hairs and dust-bunnies clogging up the ventilation ports, and shutting the machine down for several minutes and restarting seems to have fixed it. At least for now.
