This is interesting! I've tried to do exactly what you're talking about and failed because I got fringey effects on the inked lines. But I never tried to use the inks as straight-up a Quick Mask, I was still trying to select lines with a color range...
This is very, very interesting and makes me wonder a whole bunch. Logically any fringe would simply become semitransparent line shadings, right? Which is totally what needs to happen...
