As far as being decorative/character models in WoW...I've gotten to where I choose race a lot of times based on the aesthetics of the armor. My warlock is a human female because that's just what the warlock sets I like look best on. My priest and DK's are gnome females, because that's just cute as a button. And my shaman and warrior are dwarf females, because I wanted those characters to look like bad-asses. My shaman used to be a draenei, because when I made her that's all there was. I was happy to make the switch.
