- Mon, 11:19: Random factiod: When I was at Borders I ran a reading group for writers. I was the only published member, w/ my White Wolf/West End credits.
- Mon, 11:20: Most of the members were definitely "hobby" writers, although the dream of "making the jump" was a recurring undertone.
- Mon, 11:21: Most of them were pretty good writers, but they didn't have confidence in it. I remember one particular incident...
- Mon, 11:21: The writer had composed a very tense argument between two characters, and was upset that "nothing happened" in the scene.
- Mon, 11:22: I was like, "Are you kidding? The scene is perfect. It starts w/ longer sentences and paragraphs, gets shorter and more tense as it goes..."
- Mon, 11:23: "By the end of it, the stakes are enormous. These characters may be fighting with words, but they're fighting for their lives."
- Mon, 11:24: The gal looked at me with this kind of "Wait... really?" expression, and you could see the realization crossing her face.
- Mon, 11:25: That yes, it WAS a good scene, and not just a waste of words. She'd just been brainwashed into thinking physical action was the only action.
- Mon, 11:26: Anyway. This thought was triggered by a discussion w/ @LadyRowyn re: "confidence" in writing advice. Lots of writers lack it.
- Mon, 11:26: So I suspect so much writing advice is presented in a "set in stone" manner in order to bolster the inherent doubt many writers feel.
- Mon, 11:27: "This article is written with certainty, so if I follow its advice, I can be certain too!" Of course that fails. :P
- Mon, 11:27: But I suspect, at least, that's the mindset.
- Mon, 11:28: But here's a secret: the people writing those articles are just as plagued w/ self-doubt etc. as anybody. Moreso if they're still starting.
- Mon, 11:29: So take what they say with a big ol' grain of salt. So much of that stuff is written to fill wordcount, not because it's really good advice.
- Mon, 11:30: And with that, I step down from my virtual soapbox. For now. ;)
