It might seem antiquated to many, and perhaps desperate to others, but the WWII line seems always applicable: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."
The first two parts might sound wasteful, but they are the opposite. Use ALL of something, not just some of it and toss it. Get all the life you can out of things.
There are times to replace early, such as switching to LED lighting for efficiency - but there are still places where incandescent bulbs make sense.
