Well, I ordered a new lamp for the scanner; they said it would come in 5-7 working days, so prolly no SJ next week. I've got guest strips I can run tho, I think, and I will probably do some page-size sketches and either scan them at work or get [livejournal.com profile] hantamouse to do it.

UPDATE: Serves me right for not checking with Kerry the Wonder-Llama first ... she found me one in CA that will be here tomorrow for $3 cheaper. So I guess there will be SJ next week, after all! Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] mammallamadevil!

I'm bothered by this trend of almost all modern scanners having page size image areas; I require a 9x14 scanning area to scan my strips. The only one I found in town capable of doing that was $250. There are cheaper ones available over the internet, but that sorta negates the whole point of going to the store so I wouldn't have to wait. I guess larger sizes just don't sell as well, but I'm not gonna go back to trying to stitch my drawings together! Must have full-size scanner!

See, this is exactly why I do my strip as two rows of two panels - so I can draw big and still have it fit on a regular sheet of paper.

Try finding a scanner that does 11x17 scans. That sucks. The cheapest one you can get is around $1K and made by Microtek, and comes with its own SCSI card. Gods I hate SCSI some days. You have to turn the scanner on before your computer, or else it doesn't recognize the scanner, and if the power goes out on the scanner, you have to reboot EVERYTHING. Blah.

And yes, it does stink that they don't make 9x14 scanners. Even a 9x12 would be better than the 8 1/2 x 11 ones they have. Just need more room. I will blame HP for this... Why? Because I can. :)

Yup. Me too.

Hey, Gneech, what are the dimensions of your strip
anyway?

Standard newspaper default: 13" x 3.75" for one, or 13" x 7.75" for a Sunday.

If you have a SCSI interface on your computer, I'll trade you my HP ScanJet IIcx for a USB one. It's got a large scanning area to it that'll cover your needs.

Cheers

Mine's an ancient SCSI Scanmaker E3 that was copped from a Mac. I don't think it'll help ya much bud. ;) -TG

Whoa! Only 3.75" high?

Wow! You pack some punch into that lil panel!

I'm running my rows at 4.28" high (10.5cm)
These days. When I did Tiffarella, the rows
were about 3" high.

Well thanks! My preference would actually be to have panels that were about 5" tall or more, because that would be a more comfortable drawing size ... but then to keep the strip at standard comic dimensions would require them to be 18" wide! Oof. As it is, 13" strips just barely fit on my scanner.

I have considered changing to a portrait format and doing comic pages ... but that would require some major mental shifting and throw my print future into disarray, so I've avoided it. But when I did my segments for the Fright Night Special way back when, I used the same dimensions but turned them on their side ... 7.75" x 13" ... and it was amazingly fast and easy to do what was for me at the time, very nice work.
