(To the tune of "Just a Gigolo" by Louis Prima)

I'm just a web 'toonist
a tough way to exist
to work a job that
just ain't payin'

Draw until the dawn
until my mind is gone
oh, what they're sayin'

And then one of these years
I'm all out of idears
what'll they say about me?
When the end comes, here's the gist:
I was just a web 'toonist,
and life goes on, without me.

'cause I ain't got no money
and nobody pays for me
I'm so friggin' hungry
won't some fanboy buy some lunch for me?
'cause I ain't been fed

And I'll draw cute pictures, oh
all of the time
they will only be, only only be,
spoofs, satires and pop, pop shlock

Yeah I ain't go no money
and nobody pays for me
I'm so friggin' hungry
won't some fanboy, some sweet fanboy
buy some, buy some lunch for me?
'cause I ain't been fed

(fades out)

Hehe. Zatz, velly funny, mistel Gneech! (said in a really bad stereotype accent, with the "G" pronounced, too.)

Have you ever considered setting up a paypal donation account? I've seen other cartoonists done it.

I've considered it, and I may do it at some point. But even with that, I've still got to come to terms with the fact that I'm not, say, Pete Abrams, and make my life plans accordingly. -TG

Awright, da's it!

*Waves Pete Abrams off* He's no Bill Watterson or Charles M. Schultz, either.

You are John "The Gneech" Robey, who draws what I consider a pretty damned good series of comics. In fact, I think they're a helluva lot better than most of the syndicated drivel they put in The Rocky Mountain News (last comic page I regularly read), and there were four pages of comics in there, out of which there were three or four good ones, and the rest were mostly garbage.

If you constantly write as well as the snipets I've seen from your books, then that will play out nicely for you, too. Enough with the "I'm not so'n'so" comments. You're a frickin' good artist, with frickin' good work behind you, and a lot frickin' better stuff to come. *Grabs The Gneech's lapels, bopple, bopple, bopple* So fergit about Pete Abrams, Chuck Shultz, Ursula K. LeGuin and J.R.R. Tolkein. You ain't them, and they ain't nobody else what is, either. You've got some great works here, and when you quit comparing yourself to someone else is when you're gonna be more likely to realize that! *Lets go, brushes off Gneech's coat.*

*pant, pant*

You're a good kid, ya know that? Do your work. Be the best John Robey you can be, and The Gneech will come on his own. Now, go get yourself some (decaf) Green Tea and go to bed. I'll be nicer in the morning.

Hmm... I realize this was rather harsh. I hope you can take from it the goodwill I intended with my oh-so-sharp tongue. Someday I will get it under control.

But the point: You've got a good thing. And you aren't those people. It can be extremely damaging to you to compare yourself to them. Be inspired, but do not seek to emmulate. Be unique, and that is where you will create the best work.

I may not be back any time soon, so I wanted to get this out.

If I have offended, I hope you can forgive me. I'm sorry.

I think you may have missed what I was getting at with the Pete Abrams comment. :) -TG
