The Unexpected Carousel

So last night, lythandra and I were at the now-sadly-pholphless Dulles Towne Center getting some dinner. I left her at Sbarro and turned to head to the other side of the food court, when suddenly, out of nowhere, there was a carousel.

A full-size, baroque, Venetian carousel, as one might expect to see at a county fair or theme park. Right where the north end of the food court used to be.

It was fenced off, unmanned, and dark, with a "Help Wanted" sign at the booth. How I managed to miss it until I was right on top of it is beyond me -- it had to be at least 18' or 20' tall and a good 25' or 30' across, with charging horses and carriages a-plenty. It was like something out of a book ... I found myself wondering if the thing ran with phantom children on it at night when the mall was closed.

I also found myself wondering if Rapid T. Rabbit knew, and when he'd be down to ride the thing. ;)

After finally getting my kabob from the kabob place (which has a name, I'm sure, but I always think of it as "the kabob place," and if any of you are familiar with Dulles Towne Center you'll probably know what I mean about finally getting my kabob), I spent the meal examining the carousel in detail. It had Venice scenes painted around the crown, and about a third of the seats were in carriages rather than on horses so grownups could comfortably get on as well.

Weekends at Dulles Towne Center are going to be unbearable now.

Huh. A whole crew of us furs were at Big Bowl in Dulles Town Center, one floor directly down from you, for dinner around 8pm last night.
