And then there is the tale of the first time Musashi fought using a wooden sword (carded from a boat oar). His opponent had a katana that was nearly six feet long.

The katana is not invincible of course, as this tale describes, but it is a potent weapon indeed -- and no swordspeople were ever more serious about their art than the Samurai.
