I am up to page 35, approximately 25% of the way through the TCM crossover. It's going much slower than just tweaking my own strips, obviously, because I have to scan and letter Vince's originals, and in a few cases do post-scan doctoring to approximate post-scan doctoring Vince did on the original run. The TCM strips as they appear in Orange Alert won't be exactly like the ones on the TCM site, but they should be close enough that it won't matter.

If nothing else, this is giving me an up-close and detailed look at Vince's work, and it's an interesting study to say the least. I'm starting to see the basic building blocks of his technique ... "A-ha, he uses this to set the proportions for the eyes on a woman, and that to set the proportions on a man ... he uses this set of shapes to indicate bulk, and that set of shapes to make someone look slim..." etc.

I think one of the things I'm most impressed with, actually, is his use of hatching and blacks to create texture and depth. Something else I've noticed is how surprisingly sketch-like his linework is at full size. When it's shrunk to web size, the thin hatchmarks merge into a single perceivable line, creating a very cool brush-like effect. It's also very open, which would drive Hikaru nuts when it came time to color, but which creates a free, flowing feel that really suits the zaniness of the TCM scripts.

I'm really enjoying this. :) But for now, it's time to go to bed. G'nite, everybody, and have a wonderful tomorrow!
