Such persons are often afflicted with neurological difficulties -- but not always. There does not seem to be a rule that says a "savant" must also be an "idiot".
Recent tests suggest that these portions of the brain--influencing things like extreme recall--are enhancable using therapies and chemical treatments.
tdj recently posted an article on savants and autism: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.12/genius.html?pg=1&topic=&topic_set=
But back to your original sentiment: I agree wholeheartedly.
Well, I only ever conversed with the lady in question via e-mail, but other than an unusually large amount of interest in old TV shows (and "Tales of the Gold Monkey" in particular), she seemed like a normal and well-adjusted person to me. :)
having been the "memory" (MLD, when did I move in here, when did I move there for the 26th time makes me go "get a pen and then get the bleep off mah phone")and "historian" of my family and close friends since forever, this person might just consider it a blessing and a curse..probably 1/2 eidetic..MLD

I seem to be afflicted with an extremely selective memory. Irritatingly, I can recall all kinds of useless trivia, but important things illude me.
I wish I could recall a lot of things: Computer programming languages Physics equations Mathmatical formulae Scientific data Derivation techniques Astronomy and Astrophysics Biology, Anatomy and Physiology Wildlife behavior
But unfortunately, it seems I end up remembering things like Speed Racer and old Star Trek episodes. :-p
