Yesterday was an afternoon shift, thankfully, so it was a much less stressful day at work. I did have to deal with some Dilberty stuff with one of the other shift supervisors, but that was just for a few minutes as I was on my way out. Overall, it was a much more pleasant day.

Next week, unfortunately, is all 5 a.m. shifts. Bleah. I'm still job-hunting all weekend.

Anyway, the good news is, I have today and tomorrow off! Woohoo! :) A regular weekend! Something I used to take for granted! The fact that I'm excited about this, shows how dire my situation has become.

Today, I'm going to get three strips drawn, or else. I'm also going to go to a Putt-Putt (man, it's been a long time since I've been to a Putt-Putt) with Laurie and a few other friends around 11:00, and then tonight, it's D&D with [livejournal.com profile] jamesbarrett and Camstone.

Lizardmen, beware. Theran's loaded up with wands, has a new leopard familiar, and I've had a bad week! He should make it to 5th level after tonight; that will make him FTR 2 / WIZ 3 and gain him some 2nd-level spells. After that, it's one more level of wizard, and he's eligible for the Spellsword prestige class.

One can of whupass, ready to be opened! >:)

From there, he'll probably alternate between levels of Wizard and Spellsword. Fortunately, he's human, so his highest base class (Wizard) is ignored for multiclassing penalty purposes, and prestige classes don't count towards multiclassing penalties, so those two levels of Fighter aren't going to cause him unnecessary grief later.
Theran's Projected Advancement
1st Level: FTR 18th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 4/SPS 215th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 7/SPS 6
2nd Level: FTR 29th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 5/SPS 216th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 7/SPS 7
3rd Level: FTR 2/WIZ 110th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 5/SPS 317th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 8/SPS 7
4th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 211th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 5/SPS 418th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 9/SPS 7
5th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 312th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 6/SPS 419th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 9/SPS 8
6th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 3/SPS 113th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 7/SPS 420th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 9/SPS 9
7th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 3/SPS 214th Level: FTR 2/WIZ 7/SPS 521st Level: Epic 1/FTR 3/WIZ 9/SPS 9

The above assumes, of course, that the campaign doesn't dictate otherwise ... and continues up into Epic Levels. Unfortunately, the Spellsword levels don't count for improving Kitty's stats, and familiars are fragile enough as it is. So Theran's going to have to do some heavy research into ways of protecting Kitty from harm once they get past 6th level or so. Kitty only has 3 HD!

Of course, the big problem with multiclassing in D&D is that all the monsters are designed for "pure" classed characters. At 20th level, Theran will be half as good a fighter as a 20th level fighter, and half as good a wizard as a 20th level wizard. So if he's thrown up against 20th-level foes, such as dragons, he won't be able to compete with them in combat or in spellcasting. His only hope, such as it is, lies in being flexible enough to do a little bit of both and wear them down.

At 20th level, Theran will have a Base Attack Bonus of +12, and the most damaging combat spell in his arsenal will be cone of cold. The group's NPCs will be outshining him in every ability. Even Katlinel the Rogue will be better at combat (especially if he keeps multiclassing as a Ranger); Whitefire the Sorcerer will be a much better magic user.

Assuming Camstone keeps his Paladin character Baylor single-classed, Baylor will very quickly begin to outshine Theran in terms of force of arms. At 13th level, Baylor will have a higher base attack bonus than Theran will ever achieve. So, even though the Spellsword looks like a fairly munchkiney class because of the reduced spell failure, at upper levels you end up being not anywhere near as effective as either a pure fighter or a pure spellcaster.

I dunno, I may have to re-evaluate this plan. I don't want to play a pure Wizard character, because my nature is to run in mano-a-mano and mix it up ... but the group needs a Wizard and in D&D the Wizards are usually the ones who get to do the most interesting stuff.

Basically, I want to play two characters! Arrrgh.

Anyway, that's enough about Today. Tomorrow, I'm building my graphics portfolio site, doing at least one piece of freelance graphics work (a business card for another Starbucks employee's sideline), and of course, sending out resumes until the cows come home. I need a better job, in an office, with regular hours. Like I said yesterday, Starbucks and SJ are incompatible -- and continuing SJ with as few interruptions as possible seems to be very important to my mental health.

Anyway, it's time for breakfast, now. Catcha later!

Well, there are two things of note in what I have planned I should inform you of then. Whitefire wasn't meant to be a permanent part of the group and will be leaving shortly. In his place is going to come a pure wizard. You've heard about her already and she has a past with Kat. Just an FYI. -Friskf

So in other words, Theran will be doubly-outclassed. Hmm. -TG{

Sounds like you have your character's life well-planned. I've never understood multi-classing, myself. If I wanted to play a fighter, or a magic-user, I'd stick to one class per character. Maybe I just didn't want the complexity.

Not necessarily. ALthough I have't decided on just what her personality will be yet, she's half plot device, half additional fire power. Theran is the group's leader. He gets first pick of the cool magic everyone finds. He may not shine as a butt whooping fighter or cast as many or as diverse a collection of spells as the newcomer, but he's still one of the stars. And I'll be treating him that way. :) -Frisk

wizards rule! :)

I've never had that problem either...I'm so partial to playing wizards that there was never any contest as to what class I'd be playing. I *have* played other types, but I only really love wizards.

Well, the "warrior mage" type of character has always appealed to me -- Jedi Knights, for example, are basically warrior mages. The mystical aspect of the mage elevates them beyond a mere thug with a sword, while the physical training of the warrior makes them just plain more fun to play (I love to have characters running, jumping, punching, etc.).

The Psi-Warrior class from The Psionics Handbook looks intriguing from that perspective, but psionics gives my DM a headache, so that kinda knocks that out. ;)

But ... but ... wizards don't do anything but stand around and throw magic at people! ;) -TG
