*whump* Ooof...
Feb. 14th, 2004 12:20 amKung Fu was a struggle tonight. I push myself hard in class, but I seem to be 34 going on 50, and my body gives out faster than anyone else's. In an effort to combat this, I keep going to the point of exhaustion, not stopping until my body physically cannot continue.
Most people in class don't reach that point, being half or two thirds my age -- or having been practicing Kung Fu for a decade already. Unfortunately, I had to stop because I was getting light headed ... I literally couldn't hold myself standing any longer, and I really hate that feeling.
However, it wasn't all bad! Sifu Bloomfield repeatedly had me demostrate the basic kicks to the beginners in class, pointing out what good form I had each time. That was a nice ego boost. :) Now if only I could build endurance!
We're going to be busy all weekend, helping Laurie's brother clean out their dad's house. Fortunately, this shouldn't be too traumatic ... there's little if anything there that has any sentimental attachment, it's just all the stuff he collected in the past several years. However, the house is, from all reports, rather disgusting, so it's liable to be dirty work. But, it has to be done. Selling the house should cover the medical/funeral expenses, which her brother has been shouldering until now.
On an unrelated note, Keenspot sent me a nice royalty check last week, and I also got a nice share of booty from the Merchandise Maven, so suddenly I'm awash with unexpected cash. Since when does that happen? Some of it is going to the "Save Up for Dragon*Con" fund; I think the rest, I will probably put towards getting some E-Tools data sets. :) Barnes & Noble called today to tell me that my Conan d20 is in, too, so I'll stop by there on the way out in the morning and grab that before we hit the road.
But now, I must sleep. G'nite, all, and be good while I'm offline! I'll cya Monday.

Date: 2004-02-13 10:21 pm (UTC)I haven't mentioned elsewhere yet, I got GneechiMail today! WOO!
Much to my pleasant surprise, the mailman took your advice and put it in the package locker. :) And the original looks much better than the scan! Woo!
Can't wait to frame it... your note (which made me all warm fuzzy) will be going in the frame somehow, too. Even if it's behind the picture, where only I know it's there.

Date: 2004-02-14 03:25 am (UTC)Sigh... Hugs to the both of you, been there done that all too recently myself as you know. To tell you the truth in my own fuzz brained state I think I missed/forgot that her Dad had passed away too. Blargh.
On a happier note, good on ya for the legal tender, sure would be sweet to have all your art work pay for the cons at least and maybe an extra gig of ram for the Llamanator PC :)
CYa!

Date: 2004-02-14 10:14 am (UTC)how long have you been doing the kung fu? one of the advantages of being 35 over being 25 is that "10 years" no longer sounds like a synonym for "forever." :)
a lot of fitness is activity-specific, where the best preparation is doing more of the same. one of my martial arts teachers used to tell with obvious glee the story of having a marathon runner come to his class and seeing the guy wiped out at the end of class when no-one else was.
but it is possible to work on overall aerobic fitness, too. i have a friend who's my age whose resting heart rate is 60bpm and it's gone down as she's gotten older, since she took up running. (she also practices aikido, but claims it's not a heavy aerobic workout for her.) she's lackadaisical about it-- she just runs a few miles in the mornings when she can, and doesn't worry too much. as long as you're improving over time, time is on your side. :) but it's possible to work on aerobic fitness more efficiently if you care, with heart rate monitors and carefully structured schedules.
Re:
A few years ago ('97?), I had an almost-daily regimen of jogging, and I keep wanting to start that up again, and ending up not doing it. That's probably the main thing that would help me at this stage, but man, I hate running! Ugh.
Still, I hate passing out every time I go to KF class even more!

Date: 2004-02-16 01:29 pm (UTC)i'm mostly biking, lately. i bike to and from work. then again my aerobic fitness is crap, because every few years i'll get horribly sick and blow it all. molly's done pretty well by biking, though.
