[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: There's a nice bit in "Lion King 1 1/2" along those lines. :3 [referring to lions batting at yarn sort of activity]
[livejournal.com profile] tchall: Oh yeah? Hee, hee. I'm going to have to get a copy of that.
[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: It's worth watching. :3 It's not great -- but it has some good parts. :3
[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: Better than "Simba's Pride," anyhow!
[livejournal.com profile] tchall: *nodnods* Yeah, I haven't heard anyone who liked that one.
[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: Are you familiar w/ "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead?"
[livejournal.com profile] tchall: A little bit.
[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: Well, "LK 1 1/2" is basically like that, except with Timon and Pumbaa.
[livejournal.com profile] tchall: Ah, ok. Makes sense since Lion King is more or less "Hamlet."
[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: *thought balloon* "DUH! Why didn't I think of that???"

Way to out-literary-reference the English major, [livejournal.com profile] tchall! Nice job. :)

My good gosh... he's right! I never saw that before, either!
Although, I do have the excuse that the last time I saw The Lion King was in middle school, before I became obsessed with Hamlet.

Still, though, I wish I realized that earlier.

(blushes) I wish I could take credit for noticing it, too, but the fact is it's something I read sometime back. So include me in that moment, too. :)

Huh. I hadn't ever thought of The Lion King as being Hamlet.

Of course, Strange Brew is Hamlet, as well, so maybe I shouldn't be terribly shocked.

Only in Hamlet, everyone dies. But yeah, I can sort of see it.

Ok, so if Lion King is based on Hamlet, that means if that Title was real... Its counter part would be...

Lion King II: Hamtaro Strikes Back!

--Rhan, who thinks the hamsters get eaten in the first act by the Hyenas. ;) Short film, we all leave happy.

Extreme Shakespeare geekery ahead

It's partly Hamlet, but there's an overtone of King Henry IV too... the young prince abandoning his kingly duty to slide around with a couple of disreputable companions (Poins and Falstaff being the equivalent of Timon and Pumbaa, only sleazier), only to eventually step up and assume his responsibilities.

Haha. At one point, I actually wrote a short paper for an English class on the paralells between the Lion King and Hamlet, but I never even thought of Lion King 1.5 vs Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Probably because I haven't seen/read the latter two, but still.

R&G is awesome. Must-see. Even if you can't get your hands on the movie, you can find a cheap copy of the play in any used bookstore.
