Sony to put the kibosh on the Clié

I'm gonna stop liking stuff; it always gets canceled.

On the bright side, you do a fine Muttley impression. (It's not often I meet others who do that.)

I suppose that, as the butler, you like to keep things tidy?

And why are you shouting?

That sure blows! I'm having Dreamcast flashbacks just reading it!!!

Of course, it doesn't really directly affect me right now because in our house we have the "Tech Trickle Down" effect. All new items go to my husband who then gives me his hand-me-down and then anything I have passes on to my daughter. That's how I got the Palm 505 with the dim screen. :P I'll probably get the Clie' in... oh, another year or so... depending on whether he's jonesing for a PDA then or some other techno-toy. (tee hee)

I refuse to accept that Trip's vision of a 3DO on top of every TV will never come to pass.

(Owns extra 3DOs, in case one breaks.)

Can you say something to the extent of "I like American Idol" or "I like Survivor". They really need to go away. *hopes they get cancelled*

Yes, yes, If this is the case I've got a list of things for you to start liking... It might be painful at first, but the end result would off-set it.

Let's start out with William Hung... please ?

I LOVE my Clie'

The interesting bit is that they're not sending their PDAs to the US market, but they're still alive in Japan.

So, now your options in the US are palmOne or... er... palmOne.

There are probably not enough individuals that appreciate this fine piece of equipment. The Cliés will last a long time in use.

Their loss!

Maybe I'll be able to upgrade my old NR-70V at a reasonable price.

Uh huh.

Now you know why I stopped being an early adopter of products.

By waiting, I avoid the higher prices when a new product is brought out, allow for time to ensure the product will become established and supported, and for the bugfixes to make it into the product stream.

I also get a chance to read seasoned reviews and get other people's opinions on a product.

The down-side? I don't get the latest shiny everyone's talking about when it comes out. Occasionally I have to wait longer than I normally would have due to a lack of supply during the high demand period, which for REALLY popular products can be a while.

I've learned to wait. The financial payoffs of doing so are just too high to ignore.

Well I'm not exactly an early adopter myself; PDAs have been out since the mid-'90s ... the Clié has been out for what, five years?

No idea, I assumed it was a fairly recent product. I hadn't heard about it until the last month, but I'm a statistical anomoly - advertising has a really tough time getting through my intentional perception barriers towards it. ;)

3 time and out

For some reason LJ just didn't want me to reply to this seeing this is the third try.

I'm guessing Sony will come out with a Clie like combo unit that will be PDA, Cell phone and media player very shortly. There's a number of phones that are trying to do that and early on there was reported to be an add-on for the Clie that would give it cell phone capability. So I'd guess they're just dropping the one to make room for the next.

As for me I'm very happy with my Clie and all that it does for me.

From a chat earlier today...

[livejournal.com profile] lythandra: "Sony aims to fill the Clie void with new advanced handsets from Sony Ericsson, its cell phone venture with Sweden's Ericsson, and a new handheld game machine, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). ... Sony plans to stop development and sales of a new Clie after autumn in all regions, except for Japan," the wire service reported.

[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: :P

[livejournal.com profile] lythandra: Sony, of course, is spinning the news differently. "The electronics and entertainment giant denied it was abandoning the Clie -- or the 3.5 million customers who bought one -- but Todd Kort, analyst at technology research firm Gartner Inc., said Sony would probably let the device die quietly," The Los Angeles Times reported. "'They wanted to do it gently,' Kort said, noting that the Clie is powered by the Palm operating system licensed by Sunnyvale, Calif.-based PalmSource Inc. 'They have an equity stake in PalmSource and they didn't want to yank the rug from under them all at once.'"

[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: Uh huh.

[livejournal.com profile] the_gneech: "We're not abandoning you ... we're just ... not supporting you any more."
