I decided to wander into the wacky world of Jpop some over the weekend, since I've been going so anime-crazy lately. Imagine my shock and horror when I encountered Japanese rap. -.- By all that's good in the world, NOOOO!

Le sigh.

Fortunately, it was only a couple of tunes out of the many that I listened to, so hopefully it was an abberation.

Alas, if only I was allowed to listen to streaming feeds here at work. I love my MP3 library, but today I feel like listening to stuff I've never heard before. (Of course, for that matter I feel like writing and drawing, and I'm not doing that, either.)

I also meant to mention that my arm is bandaged up today. I'm not sure if it was cartwheels in Kung Fu or if it's repetitive motion injury from all the mouse-clicking I've been doing at work and on Tough Breaks, but I have what feels a bit like a torn ligament between my right tricep and my elbow. (It's a sharp, needle-like pain just above the elbow towards the back of my arm.) It feels very similar to the bout of carpal tunnel I had a long time ago, and to the shin splints I got when I started KF. Keeping it wrapped up in an ace bandage helps considerably, but it's still sore. I just hope it doesn't interfere with all the work I've been doing to get ahead on the strip.

Also, I wanted to write a Brigid and Greg fictionlet this morning, but I never did come up with a good idea for one. Oh well! I'm sure something will come to me.

Yeow, J-Rap... scary!
J-Rock is superior to J-Pop, which is superior to J-Rap, I think.

As for the Brigid and Greg, either write nothing because you still have nothing or you write about being unable to write. Can't beat a story about writer's block, right?

Actually, I was thinking of another fanfictionlet; Something involving the phrase, "Hey, are you following me? Why are you still here?"
As for Tough Breaks, maybe you deserve a break. I find myself telling this to a bajillion artists, but it's true, every artist deserves a break.

There there, Gneech, we won't force you to take that break, but you do work pretty hard, and when you're sore, you're sore.
If you end up busting your drawing arm while working on this too hard, you'll only pay for it in the long run. ;.;

Haha. J-Rap is one of the silliest things ever. The music videos are great for a laugh!

But Gneech, you're also listening to Morning Musume. Your entire tast of music may come into question! Trust me, it's happened to me. I have a dvd of their music videos!

yay j-pop!

m and i bought some random j-pop in tokyo. i had assumed the term was some sort of derogatory american slang categorization; but no, the tower records we went into had a big "j-pop" aisle. actually about six aisles.

i'm not sure what's good, though, and don't really know names. the first album we picked up, which was being heavily promoted, mostly sounds like songs from ddr or from anime fight scenes. in fact i recognized one from an anime series i'd watched, though i can't for the life of me remember which series...

Well, Yoko Kanno is good, as is Yoko Kanno + The Seatbelts. If you get a chance to make a note of the album, I'd love to find out what it was!

The main thing I like about certain J-Pop songs is they're upbeat, unlike much of the pop music today, and the female singers don't sound like they're so anemic they're about to pass out. I don't know many specific groups either, just songs I've heard on anime that I like. Blue Weekend is one I like, from Real Bout High School. We've got some soundtracks from Love Hina on their way from Amazon. Puffy Ami Yumi's music is okay, but I haven't been too fond of their cartoon on Cartoon Network. I wonder if I would like the songs any more or less if I understood the lyrics...

Um, what kind of female pop music are you listening to? o.0

I'll give you that about J-pop, though; I think it helps that a lot of what I've heard is TV theme-based, which by nature HAS to be catchy. ^.^

I can't name any names, because I don't pay attention to the name unless it's something I like. Suffice to say I prefer women singers with strong voices. Like Shirley Bassey.

it looks like the one we'd listened to is "hyper yocomix" by yoko ishioo. though i'm not certain about that last letter. the anime the song i recognized was from is either "noir" or this other one whose name i forget... but we have noir and it's on the title screen of whichever dvd, so when i get home i'll check.

right now we're in the car, listening to another j-pop cd, by "puffy". it is very '70's. not exacly what i was hoping for.

ok, determined that the anime the yoko ishioo song is from is "noir". also that the other series i was thinking of was "revolutionary girl utena," which is pretty entertaining, if strangely repetitive in structure...

a good Japanese music staion i listen to is www.japanaradio.com (ok, the website looks a little amatureish but the stream is very good quality and they have a huge library of songs). They play a wide selection from anime songs to general japanese music.

worth checking out (mainly cause its free :) )

And hope yer arm heals up. Do you find drawing hurts too?

Thanks. :) Mostly a matter of what position my arm is in; if I can find a comfortable position to work in, it's not a problem. But the pain has become more intrusive over the past week, making it a bit harder to find those comfortable positions!

And fear not, B&G will be around sooner or later. ;)

The latest Winamp has a cosmic dumpload of music streams. Seriously, it has replaced the radio in my house. There's never any music on the radio anymore anyways, so Winamp is the only way I get to hear anything new.

*listens to DDR J-pop* Well, at least that's what I think it is. Wasn't the group B4U simply dedicated for DDR songs?

Yeah! J-pop, J-rap, J-rock! And don't forget K-Pop (like "Happy Birthday To Me" by Bulldog Mansion). I see you are coming to the same conclusion I did about 10 years ago... but it's a lot easier to find titles today then it was then.

A good resource for finding out about artists is J-Rock Wikipedia (http://www.tedmills.com/jrockwiki/).

Other Yoko Kanno soundtracks available in the US: "Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex" and "Wolf's Rain". I have the "Wolf's Rain" OST and that's played alot. Other soundtracks I play alot are Chobits 001 and 002 by K-Taro Takanami and Ranma 1/2 TV Theme Songs Complete.

Good J-rap: Scha Dara Parr and East End x Yuri. Seriously.

Good samplers: Japan For Sale Vols. 1-4. Put out by Columbia/Sony, it gives a nice overview of the Japanese scene. Vol 4 was out just last October on Tofu Records in the US and all can be had at really reasonable prices. Bungalow's Sushi 3003 and Sushi 4004 are a bit older, but still fine samplers.
