[livejournal.com profile] lythandra and I saw King Kong today. Quick and dirty review: Too damn long.

The problem with being too in love with your own project, is you linger over things. This would have been a great movie at an hour and forty-five minutes.

Three hours and ten minutes? I'm sorry, you need to trim the fat. King Kong has a very compact storyline. (What's interesting, is that the original has the exact same problem -- so in that regard, it was a very accurate remake.)

I could also have done without Andy Serkis being eaten alive by giant leeches. That's the kind of thing people are referring to when they talk about "gratuitous."

Aside from that, it was pretty good.

I had to walk out of the movie after that point, got to when Kong was in New York and just left. My flesh was crawling somthing feirce.

I didn't like the bugs and other creepy things either. It went on for a bit too long. They could have cut an hour or so out of that from the movie.

I am genuinely, seriously, so glad you spoilered.

I know now that's a movie for DVD. With all the lights on. When I can run from the room.

Yeah, the "icky bottom of the canyon" sequence was basically horror movie material. Bleah.

Weirdly, although I have an intense dislike for horror movies, I didn't have a problem with the violence in King Kong. I enjoyed the remake, much more than the original (which I haven't seen in 15 years and don't remember much about, other than that I thought it was "meh").

I didn't have a problem with the length, either. Some stuff could be trimmed -- there were a lot of action sequences that didn't add much to the story -- but I think 1:45 would be cutting too much.

It isn't violence. I don't mind horror movies. But bugs. Not good. Getting eaten alive by leeches. So very NOT GOOD.

I had trouble with the scene in Indiana Jones too. Bugs bad. Badbadbad.

Yeah, I hate bugs, too. I dunno why the giant bugs in Kong didn't bother me more. Maybe I'm getting over my instinctive freak-out reaction towards them. I certainly found the Indiana Jones scene utterly appalling when I saw it many years ago. Eeeeeeeeeeeeek!

About what I had heard elsewhere. I think this is going to be a DVD movie and even then only a maybe buy. I just like the old one well enough that a remake such as this doesn't really grab me.

Well, it was better than the 1978 remake, anyway!

But being slapped in the face with a fish would be better than the 1978 remake.

Well, this is Peter Jackson.

My curiosity got to me, and I looked at the spoiler.

The excessive length, the giant leeches...the utter disinterest in Kong to begin with...

I think this is a "wait for DVD" one. Especially since the Zorro movie is already on DVD! I just missed that one in the theatre, and it's already out in home form. I like the new alacrity in the home movie market. It will make me go to the movies less when I shouldn't be, and save me more things to take all-nighter breaks with.

Can't wait for the home movie thing to be "any movie I want to see on demand", but I realize that's a ways off.

I might still go see it, but I fear I'm going to agree with you on the too damned long.

Maybe I'll save my money for The Producers...

Yeah. The whole bug scene could have been bye-bye. I was crawling over the back of my seat to get away from it.

I wish I had gone to see "Serenity" instead, before it was too frickin' late.

Have the best

I now officially have no interest whatsoever in seeing Kong.

Anybody wanna go see Narnia again?

I'll probably see that next weekend. Here's hoping it's a bit more upbeat. :)
