By now many of you have heard that I was defeated at Iron Artist -- alas! By only four points, too. FC has still been much cool funness. I regret nothing, do you hear? Nothing!!!

But enough about that. Let's get on with the workout report. ;)

On Sunday morning in the way-too-early, [livejournal.com profile] invisiblewolf, Derrick Dasenbrock, [livejournal.com profile] codyvfrost, [livejournal.com profile] drleo and I piled into Lanny's rental super-swank-white-Cadillac and we trundled over to a Gold's Gym for workoutage. It was interesting to see how the machines compared to the Bowflex. Some things were much easier, some were much harder, and some were actually worth doing -- such as the extra leg exercises I tacked on just 'cause I could.

Flat Barbell Bench Press: 1 set 7 reps @ 70 lbs (bleah)
Narrow Pulldowns: 1 set 10 reps @ 60 lbs (zowie!)
Triceps Pushdown: 1 set 10 reps @ 50 lbs
Bench Press: 1 set 10 reps @ 45 lbs
Seated Lat Rows: 1 set 10 reps @ 30 lbs
Rear Deltoid Row: 1 set 10 reps @ 40 lbs
Deadlift: 1 set 10 reps @ 30 lbs
Chest Fly: 1 set 10 reps @ 30 lbs
Military Press: 1 set 10 reps @ 15 lbs, 1 set 10 reps @ 10 lbs (gah)
Leg Press: 1 set 10 reps @ 300 lbs
Leg Lift: 1 set 10 reps @ 70 lbs

Body Weight: unknown

Basically, anything involving the chest (particularly the bench presses) were OHMYGODHARD, whereas anything with the lats seemed slightly easier than when using the Bowflex.

Still, it was a neat and fun experience, and I was glad to have some kind of workout. I've never actually had a workout in a public gym before. The closest I'd had before that was the VCU facilities, many long years ago.

i still say the deadlift number looks like it's missing a zero. there must be something about machine deadlifts that i don't understand...

(the others look reasonable to me although your triceps are in impressive shape relative to most everything else, i think...)

We did do a couple of workouts in the Lionsgate complex room and in the room in the old Circle building. Those were sort of public gyms. Kinda. Okay, well, not really. 0;)

Oh, rats. And I had so wanted to hear a Gneechian bellow of inchoate rage and deathless vengefulness. "NEXT YEAR, VERMY... NEXT YEAR!!!

I'm glad that you were able to go out to the gym with us -- we really should do that again! AC's practically around the corner, y'know. ;-) And we'll have to find some extra time to exchange workout routines and the like. :-)

Might not have the pimpmobile next time, tho'.

And if you guys go to the gym at AC, I want to come along too, all right? ;)

That's OK with me! :-) Though we might need more than one car to transport everyone's HYOOGE-ly muscular selves to the gym.

I'll be nowhere near HYOOGE by AC, though I hope to be in much better shape. But who knows? Maybe genetics will prove me lucky? ;D

Well, 'in good shape' is a good start. :-) What are your genetics, if you don't mind my asking? See, I'm half-Asian, and it's very hard for me to put on muscle mass. I have a fairly light skeletal structure, too, so I can't lift extremely heavy weights. Still, it's nice to get a decent pump on some of the lower weights at the gym. :-)

I actually have no idea of my genetics. I know my dad's a pretty big guy, and so was my grandfather. They're pretty bulky, but at the same time also overweight. My grandfather used to take up an entire porch swing by himself before he passed away. My father is heading that way.

This doesn't mean that I'm predisposed to being chunky. I think my father and grandfather have just really let themselves go. I've actually always been pretty lanky without much exercise, and whenever I do start exercising, I seem to see results pretty quick, especially in the gym. After just a week, things already feel different. This past summer, after just a month and a half in the gym, Ben said I felt all different. ;)

So I've got more than half a year until AC. I hope I can make some changes.

Ah, OK. Yeah, you seemed pretty lanky when I met you at MFF. :-)

I'm sure you'll improve -- just be sure to go to the gym regularly. Oh, and you've got only five months to AC, BTW (less than half a year, which I'm assuming is what you meant). :-)

If the number of con attendees interested in fitness keeps increasing like this it might be easier to hold AC in a gym.

I once asked someone from the AC staff if I could hold a weight training lecture/discussion as part of the con programming. The response that I got was something like "it's not furry, strictly speaking, so it can't be part of the programming". Ah well.

Besides, I can't imagine that everyone would be into fitness. I mean, that would completely shatter the stereotypes of furry fans, and we can't have that, can we? ;-)

That sounds like it would have been fun. You could always make it an unofficial event this year.

Fitness seems to be contagious in this fandom, so it's possible that everyone would become interested. And I like shattering things, especially stereotypes.

Hmmm...unofficial event. There's a thought. :-)

As soon as I get over my cold, I'm heading back into the gym!

Oh, and I love shattering stereotypes, too. Shattering other things, maybe less so. :-)

Sounds like Sunday morning at AC will turn into such an event.

Hope you feel better soon.

Shweet! :-) One thing I'd like to do more of, is work out with you, Vince, etc., at the same station and trade ideas on variety of exercise angles and exercises in general.

Maybe we can do breakfast, too, while we're out and about. :-)

Oh, and will you be driving to the convention?

Re: Driving, yes, my current expectation is to rent a smallish SUV or minivan for the trip. I should be able to tote some folks around for the occasion.

"my erector spinae is sore"

That sounds so wrong...

Working out in a real gym is quite an experience, isn't it? It's a bit intimidating, but for some reason, it gets better with practice. You start to like it more, and for me the time goes faster there too. It doesn't seem like such an endeavor to work out.
