Chinatown (Warning: Vagueness Ahead)

So there's this group in which I don't exactly feel welcome. The leaders of the group, I've got no problem with, but this group is pretty freeform. One or two loud mouths tend to dominate the actual course of events, or at least the character of such ... and many of the loud mouths don't like me (or people 'like' me) and have no problems saying so in very explicit terms.

But the leaders of this group and I, you see, have a mutually beneficial arrangement. So I do my business with them, they do their business with me, and other than that we pretty much ignore each other.

Except now, I find myself in a position to help out some of the members of this group who have been fairly decent to me ... and I'll take it, but that means going back into the belly of the beast and interacting with this group like a member of it again -- something I'm not at all keen to do.

Ah well. I guess I'll just have to put on the asbestos undies, strap on the chainmail, and wade in.

I have SO been there before! You are doing the right thing.

Do your best to ignore the troublemakers, and when they must not be ignored, try to thwart them as gently and tangentially as possible (that is, avoid butting heads) while gathering support from the ones who appreciate your participation.

That's pretty much my intention. It's just tiresome -- I find myself wanting to slap them and say, "Is this how professional adults behave???"

The reality isn't as interesting as the vagueness makes it sound. It's just one of those things where I don't want to blab to the world the various parties involved.

Barring everything else, just ignore the idiots and take care of the rest.

But if that doesn't work and anyone gives you any guff, just stand up, look them directly in the eye in front of everyone else, and say, "If you have any specific problems with me or my being here, either speak your peace or keep your peace."

It's a trifle confrontational, but it puts everything right on the floor. And you are a Very Big Man, and you look like you can snap someone's spine like a cheese straw.
