Hits are Tough to Predict

Anybody who creates popular media for a living (or even a hobby) could have told you that much. But it's at least interesting to see it studied.

That's an interesting study, but downloading a song doesn't necessarily mean they wanted to keep it or liked it better than others. I wonder if the downloads were free or if they had to pay for them. I would think that would skew the results somewhat. People are a lot pickier when they have to pay for something, even if it's only 99 cents.

Still it just goes to show that it's not always quality that makes a success or lack thereof that makes a financial failure.

I was thinking the same thing that they mentioned at the end, about tweaking the data to make it seem like popular stuff wasn't and vice versa -- that would make for an interesting experiment IMO!
