Comic-Con?

I've got to decide what to do re: Comic-Con this year. Normally, Dragon*Con is my "go purely for fun and blow a wad of money" con. However, this year I may be spending a lot of time at the Plan 9 table at D*C, as Jeff Darlington won't be there and Bill and Bruce will probably really want the extra hand. This would turn D*C into more or less a working con, which a) mitigates the cost (but probably does not eliminate it), and b) eats up some of the "vacationey" aspect.

This might free up funds for Comic-Con, not to mention making a vacation trip more desirable. But the problem is that Comic-Con comes first -- so if I'm going to go to it, I kinda have to make that decision by the end of this month.

Thoughts, anyone?

I got one. The hotels are filling horrendously, according to Cooner, so unless you've someone to stay with already, you'll have an 8+ block hike.

I'm pretty much assuming that I'll get some place across town and rent a car, actually. :) So that's not as much of an issue.

Have you seen what parking is like? ^ ^;;

I haven't seen anything, I've never been there!

So maybe I'll rent a car and have a 7-block hike. I've got comfy shoes. ;)

BTW, I might need to snag your help on this. Stay tuned for details in the next few days.

You'll need them. This is what I did the three years I went. It's not so bad, actually, although parking can be expensive (anywhere between $20 and $10 per day, depending on where you park and what day of the weekend it is, and some of the lots take your keys so they can fill up the lot completely, and they close by 6pm, so you've got to be back there to pick up your keys). Driving around downtown San Diego can be a bit confusing, as well, but probably no worse than driving around any other city you've never been to.

Having said all that, I heartily recommend going. As a comics geek, it was one of the coolest, most mind-blowing things I've ever attended. If something exists in comics, movies, television, SF, or fantasy then you'll be able to find it there, find somebody who knows about it there, or find somebody there who can point you towards somebody who knows about it. And if you can't find one of those three, then what you're looking for probably doesn't exist.

Well, if you really are into comics and media now, ComicCon is a great place to be. I think the panels are worth a lot of the frustration. Sometimes your work can get discovered by some higher-ups, if you're a good enough. A friend of mine got a deal to make T-shirts for Hot Topic nationally because one of their scouts saw her designs in the small-press booth.

It's expensive, however, and there are lots of crowds. Then there's the fact that ComicCon is not a niche audience, so a comic that targets a certain section of the population might be more difficult to sell, since people's first impressions (not necessarily correct, but it's their first impressions nonetheless) might marginalize your work.

Well if I went this year, it would be purely as an attendee to get a feel for the place. [livejournal.com profile] mammallamadevil and I are thinking about doing some kind of table arrangement in 2007, but that's still just something under consideration at the moment.

] If you go, I'll wear my fedora. ;)

] Also, if you have the cash for them, the pedicabs are an awesome experience - especially towards the end of the con, when your feet are dying.
