Shaped to Fit Its Container
Dec. 22nd, 2022 11:12 amKnowing me as I do, it's entirely unsurprising that I wasn't satisfied with pre-made PBtA games for the campaign I want to run. All of them had good bits, but none were the complete package. After ruling out Roll20 as a platform because it's just too dang much work to build a custom engine there, I found a "generic" PtbA module for Foundry and started building.
Unfortunately, due to limitations in Foundry's items and journal nodes (brought about mostly by the fact that nobody has needed the functionality yet) there are still pieces where the game as I wrote it, and the interface that I want to play it through, don't fit. One Playbook has you make a list of people and add checkboxes to them to track how often you gain Influence (or Strings in the TSL parlance), and there's no easy way to just put that in. I could code it in HTML, but without scripting there's no way to save the state of the checkbox. So I'm looking at ways I could possibly change the rule to fit into the framework of what Foundry can do.
On the one hand, I'm annoyed that I can't just DO this thing what would be trivially easy on paper; on the other hand, going through and translating my rules into actionable things that can be meaningfully put into the VTT has really made me go through the rules with a fine-toothed comb to make sure they are complete, consistent, and fit together properly. So it's been valuable in its own right, even if a bit irritating at times. XD
I hope my players will like this game! I'm very much looking forward to doing something that's not a d20 variation again.
