Not necessarily. Some kids that are really visual-spatial (which this kid had to be to produce perfectly such a large scale drawing) maybe have Asperinger's or may not simply know the name of what they are drawing. In either case, they can see and conceptually know what they are drawing, but may not have the words to describe what they are doing. This would be a rather extreme case, but it's rather poignant to underline the point; not all kids fit neatly onto an A4 sheet of paper.
On the first article, I've kind of thought that for a long time. Edison used to cat-nap and take regular breaks in Memlo Park.
As for the latter, it made me think of this X-Files episode of this boy who was doing pages of 1's and 0's, which when put together formed a large picture of his missing sister.
