Does this look like rabies to anybody besides me?

Granted, northern VA is "Rabies Capital of the World" so I tend to be jumpy about it, but still...

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] soappuppy sayeth "probably not" and she should know. So it's all good then. :)

The woman saying "Don't bite it" sounds English, and we don't actually have rabies over here!

(saw this post one my friendfriends page, hope you don't mind me commenting!)

Granted the UK is rabies-free so I'm no expert, but wouldn't a rabid fox be less alert? That one looks like he has an itchy face, but is otherwise enjoying life.

Speaking as someone who works with foxes:

With rabies you're going to get a kind of staggering gait, loss of coordination, aversion to sunlight and noise...some major neurological shit goes on with rabies and I doubt lil foxie would have the coordination to run smoothly like it does and/or jump on and off the trampoline if it were actually rabid. Take a look at its motion when it runs on the ground and when it jumps on and off the trampoline -- it is fluid, smooth motion without seizure-looking things or head tilting. Rabies makes you *weird*, and this fox did not look weird except when it was rolling on the trampoline.

I saw three or four clear, well-coordinated mouse pounces, and a lot of face wiping -- perhaps the rubber felt really good against its head? It was nervous about something -- it kept looking up (its ears worked properly, another suggestion of non-rabidness) and kept breaking off from play to groom itself or to redirect onto the trampoline and bite it. However -- especially with the flat-out stretch in the middle -- it looks to me more that the lil critter is really enjoying itself. Not sure what this thing is, suspicious that it might be doing something really dumb, but really, really enjoying the boing. :)

It might have had ear mites and was enjoying a good rub, or might have simply been having fun with the unusual surface.

See? See? It was a cute fox! It was not rabid, Mr Negative!

That's good to know it's probably not rabid. We've seen foxes around this area acting strangely, exhibiting some rabid behavior, so both [livejournal.com profile] the_gneech and I are rather jumpy about it.

Yeah, but you're not acting rabid for the same reason ;)

I'll get back to you on the rest.

It looked to me like a "pillowdome", which is just what it sounds like: a geodesic dome using inflatable plastic pillows for panels. I've only seen transparent/translucent ones, however; they use them as greenhouses. I have no idea what a white one would be for.

The white thing is an Inflatable Chill Out Room (a/k/a The Ponysphere—I have one.) They can fit at least two people comfortably, and have small holes at the joints where one could string lights, etc. through.

When I saw it, I first thought from the looks of the haunches that it might have some form of "Mange." (Miniture mites, that cause hair to fall out and can make ears itch)

But, I think it was also kinda just having some fun with it.

If it had been rabid, I don't think it would have been as frisky... or willing to jump back up on the trampoline.

After all... even I can understand the value of "Bouncey, bouncey, bouncey..."

My guess is that the fox is trying out for a live-action role as Jack Black.

Have the best

The money off sticker on that pepsi bottle looks like it's in English money and the woman sounds English, in which case no it's not rabies since rabies doesn't exist here. There are advantages to being an island :)
