[livejournal.com profile] lythandra and I just finished watching the 4-part R.O.D. -- Read Or Die OVA. It's good, but definitely engages the ol' brain-hurter. The story is a kind of "James Bond meets the X-Men" with a dash of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for flavor.

I definitely recommend it, although I could have done without the recurring "President soils himself" gag and was very surprised that there were only four episodes. Why not just make it a single movie and be done with it? There's also a sorta-sequel TV series which, I gather, starts fresh with a whole new set of main characters. Again, an odd choice, although I can see why Emma Cleavage (er, "Nancy") couldn't come back and Gruff Soldier wouldn't come back ... certainly Agent Paper could.

Anyway, if you like thrillers with a SF/fantasy twist, you'll like R.O.D. -- Read Or Die, so check it out.

R.O.D. is the best!

And the series is quite excellent. It does start with new characters, but believe me, you haven't heard the last of the old characters. Quite the opposite. As much as I like the OVA it is rather short, and the TV series really has a spectacular plot, especially when the two series intersect.

P.S.
Yes, Nancy is mostly fan service, but they do give her character.

Do the new characters fade into the background when the original ones reappear? Because I saw the first few episodes and I don't really connect with these characters. The Paper was a sympathetic character to any avid reader, and Miss Deep was mysterious and tragic, whereas I can go to any convention to see the interaction between cranky has-been authors and their ineptly obsequious fans (and the occasional little brat who hates everything).

R.O.D. the TV series is an AWESOME anime. I was so totally hooked by the first episode. ^^

In the TV series, as far as I could tell, only Agent Paper returns. But, I didn't get too involved with the OVA. The new characters are all involved with Agent Paper in one way or another, so it's rather cool. :D

I won't spoil it for you, but I will say that some of the original characters have drastic personality changes...maybe not Drake Anderson so much, but still, it's enough to make you go, "Quoi?"

Good stuff if you can stick it out through the 20+ episodes.

Actually the OVA is 3 episodes, not 4. But the whole ROD TV series is pretty good. Its a bit more out there than the OVA but it all interconnects. Oh, and if you might wanna pick up the ROD Mangas. They cover the period before ROD the OVA, so you can get some back history. The first one was pretty interesting to read.

And yes, it doth rock much. My fav character was the spiffy German Glider King, but thats just because I love flying machines. *drool* Anyways, glad you enjoyed it.
