Yet again, Micro$oft Word proves what a total piece of shit it is. 0.o I'm typing away on a project that I've been working on for a week, hit CTRL+S to save, and Word gives me an error that it can't save the file, closes it, and deletes it from my disk.

Yes. CLOSES IT AND DELETES IT FROM MY DISK.

The hell.

I guess it's time to look into file recovery software. :P

Excel once pulled a weird trick on me with a message claiming I couldn't save because another user, me, had the file open.

I remember getting that treatment periodically from Word 2k back in high school. I've luckily been spared any (destructive) snafus since I started using Office XP.

Have you tried going into your hidden temp files to see if there is an earlier saved copy of your Word document? I got -real- familiar with -my- temp folders [2 different ones to check in my Win XP, as opposed to only 1 to check in Win 98].

I found a .tmp backup, but I couldn't get Word to open it until I rebooted the crazy machine.

Fortunately, I managed to save all but a few paragraphs.

*nodnods* I'd use Open Office, but it's file format is not standard, and password protection (which matters to me) is not viable between the programs.

OpenOffice.org can handle most of Microsoft's formats (.docx, .xlsx, and .pptx are the exceptions), and its native format, ODF, is an ISO standard.

True -- unfortunately, in a corporate environment, the lack of password protection between Office suites does matter; it's not uncommon to have to create documents or spreadsheets which need to be able to be looked at by lots of people within the company, but which only a few should be able to modify.

I know what they're there for. MS Office just has passwords that are so easy to remove that they're essentially nonexistent.

As I said, the issue is with passwords. O-Office will not deal with passwords on M$-Office format files, and M$-Office cannot use O-Office passwords at all.

So I am stuck with Micro$oft because it has to be compatible with what is available at work.

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I installed System Pack 3 on my main PC last month and I wonder if it messed something up.

Yes. WinXP SP3 is a broken install; NPR discussed it for a few days, then dropped it. I'm guessing Micro$oft did something to silence the protests. If you can, roll back.

I just uninstalled it. I thought it funny one of the programs the uninstall program said uninstalling SP3 might effect was Open Office.

My computer seems faster now. And I was able to load and re-edit the document that was causing MS Word to crash. It was a form letter with lots of _________________ lines in it and when I tried to edit those lines, MS Word would crash. So I think SP3 is the culprit.

Around 2000, I discovered Word's autosave to be both useless (my normal computer crashed often enough that I'd save every other sentence) and destructive - it crashed while autosaving, taking the rest of the file with it.

The "fix" is to alternate between file A and file B, but nobody seems to do that.

Fortunately, Word 2007 seems to be pretty good about asking you if you want to recover changes to a files you haven't modified when you next start it up. It's also really, really crap when you want more than one document over at a time.
