An attempt to draw Baloo on-model but in an original pose. I'm not sure where the idea of having him look doubtfully into a "Box O' Stuff" came from, but it works. :)

Baloo looking at stuff in a box.

I'm actually pretty satisfied overall, except that his toes are too large (his feet should be tiny little hemispheres to be on-model) and there's something not-quite-right about the placement of his right arm that I can't put my finger on.

The character model has pretty short, stout biceps. i think the angle you have it at suggests a much longer upper arm than on the left side.

Then again, the character was always very humerous.

I think his cheek ruff ought to be a little more round and full, as well. It looks a bit more like drezzer's

Ja, I think that's it. His elbow needs to come up.

But otherwise, it looks just like him. Very recognizable! =)

Seriously, the one thing that comes to mind when I see this picture Phil Harris' The Thing, obviously. :P

It looks like his upper arm is too far forward, to me-- as if the arm is rotated forward in the socket. Perhaps if you can add a little definition to the outer edge of the shoulder, and bring the elbow back towards his side? I bet that would make it look more natural.

Yeah, Baloo's waist is basically right under his armpits, which is where the elbow should line up. It's too far away from his body.

Well, that would be the case if he weren't bending over. Maybe a happy medium between the two?

The only thing I can get is...

Baloo wouldn't be looking into a box o' stuff, that's more Wildcat's shtick.

"Useful Box for Keeping Things In"

I'm no artist, and hence no art critic, but I have to ask why he appears to be wearing a New York City police officer's headgear?

It's his pilot hat. :) In TaleSpin, he pretty much wore it all the time.

As a Gneech-drawn Baloo, I think it works just fine. There's a few nitpicks as someone who watched TDA a lot, but it would just be nitpicking.

So just as an overall structural comment, I think you've placed his weight a bit too far upwards. His stomach looks more like a beachball, kinda spherical and rigid, whereas the weight should saaag softly a bit more down to the pelvis... I guess I'm partially basing this on the way the shirt splits open pretty abruptly.

Okay, maybe that was nitpicky, but it's just kind of a suggestion for future "squash and stretch" (not the detectives) mentality in general.

Nitpicks welcome! That's kinda the point of the exercise. :) I'm trying to teach myself how to not draw in my style but to draw what I mean to draw instead (if that makes any sense at all). That way my own style can be added back in later when I want it. :) So please, by all means, nitpick away.

The abrupt shirt opening is pretty much the way Baloo always appears, although the lines of the shirt may be a little too curved, creating that "rigid ball" effect. Baloo's body is basically teardrop-shaped, which probably could have been played up more in this picture. I was trying to make him lean over towards the box, but there should have been more taper towards the top.

Well, there's style nitpicks, and then there's fanboy nitpicks, and I wanted to avoid the latter. Things like "his shirt doesn't have the sleeve seam at the shoulder" or "the white part of his belly should go down all the way to his groin in a standing position", yanno?

See, it's not just about the teardrop shape or the taper at the top, it's about gravity and character weight, as Disney is pretty reasonable about physics realism. The way a male's gut will rest upon his pelvis, and where most of the flesh will flow down to the legs, is what I'm getting at.

It actually took me a bit to figure out what was off, and I guess the shirt isn't the deal. But the widest part of his hips should be lower, and then flow in a convex fashion all the way to the foot. His right hip is too concave there, and a bit high.

This is, as far as I can tell, an official Disney image...

He's got a bit of a lean so it's not quite a direct comparison, but it's almost the same height. You have the legs and torso mostly the right proportions, you just have to squoooooooosh the midsection down further. His left hip there swells out only a tiny bit above the groin.

And I didn't realize it 'til I re-looked at an official image, but you made his shoulders too wide 'n' manly, in the model they slope down more like a real bear. Naturally it's not something I would've objected to XD

That picture looks a bit more rounded than the normal artwork from the cartoon, though, doesn't it? Sure, it's an official Disney pic, but I'd bet dollars to dougnuts it's not the animator who drew it.

It was surprisingly difficult to find a full-body normal-pose screengrab, but...

The one I linked originally is slightly more stylized than the TV shot, but the proportions are about right.

They are hard to find. That is a great shot for this particular exercize, though, as it's a similar posture. That, and it's got Don Karnage in it... I don't have a DK fettish like some furs, but he is cute! <3
